Artist History
ESN formed in April '98. Based in the inner city Studio 101, they have recorded their debut EP, Zer0ne, and are now starting to show Sydney their expressive and soulful sound. So far ESN have been received with great enthusiasm, evidently helping to satisfy a scene craving for something more diverse and less rock focussed.
Ben Turley, 24, on bass, also plays in "The Government", and was previously in avant-rock instrumental group "Kiln". Skot Herbert, 24, guitarist, was the songwriter in the industrial-pop-metal "Ihuza". Matt Horam, 21, drums, was also in "Kiln". Graeme Kent, 28, also on guitar, hails from punk band "Goons, Hired Goons".
The heavy slants of their previous bands have been left behind, as ESN continually explore new territories.
All members of ESN sing, resulting in an absence of the singular focus of a frontman, and providing different vocal flavours for each song.
The debut CD containing five songs – “Zer0ne”, “Little Boy”, “Anacrusis”, “Drinking & Boating” and “Water” was recorded mostly live by the band at Studio 101. Although their guitar-based tunes are diverse, there is a unifying sense of honesty and originality. The first independent release of Zer0ne has been played on Triple J's Oz Music Show and prompted several positive comments on the Triple J website. The remastered version is also now being aired.

Press Reviews
ESN: Zer0ne (EP)
Zer0ne is the debut EP from Sydney band ESN. And if, as they say, diversity is the key to success, then this band
has the ingredients to achieve decent results.
From this debut offering one can get the feeling that there is more to the ingredients than first appearance. This
pleasant mix can be attributed to the mixed vocal styles in my opinion. As each member contributes to lead vocal
duties, the flow of songs tends to break away from patterns that we usually see emerge from standard band
structures. I get a sense that this mix of vocalists also leads to the various styles found on the EP. It is easy to see
that each members influences surface into the way they perform the various tracks.
Something that should keep both band and punter happy.
I have had a chance to see ESN live, although briefly, but hey! It was my night off! But from that little sample I feel
recorded and live diversity is what ESN should be able to capitilise on.
The title track, zer0ne (Zero One), opens the EP's diversity in itself. Dark, brooding verses leading to an edgy
chorus that can really rock given the right amount of volume (as if anybody listens to music quietly). This track is
followed up nicely by the track Little Boy. The fourth track, Drinking & Boating is the real gem on this EP. The
vocals have a subtle strength about them. And the simplicity in the instrumental techniques make this a short but
sweet track. The mixture of dark, emotional content and oft times angsty driving rock is why this EP is a pleasure
to listen to.
It is no doubt that ESN will be playing a lot more gigs in the near future, given that they formed in April last year,
and in that short time have been able to formulate a nice debut EP. Keep an eye out for ESN, Zer0ne in all the
usual record stores. (Nathan)

ESN - ZERONE (review from hEARD magazine)
Apparently a 4 piece from Sydney, ESN have their own sound that combines a number of influences, though none of these are
particularly obvious to the casual observer, so I won't mention them. Each member of the band also has experience with other bands
& in an unusual turn of events, all member get their turn at doing vocals, resulting, as the band say themselves, in an '....absence of
the singular focus of a frontman...'
That notwithstanding, the band have their own unique style, best put forward by the title track, which opens this excellent 5 tracxk
(sic) ep. The main focus of this song, apart from the cool sounding vocals is the great guitar section which sits quite comfortably out
front.
Both "Little Boy" & "Anacrusis", which is an instrumental, are the band's more relaxed songs, while "Drinking & Boating" is another
cool track. Closer "Water" completes the tracklisting & shows the band's music in another light, perhaps a little less emotional than
the title track, but no less appealing. Based on the strength of this ep, I'd be expecting a pretty cool album for them in the not too
distant future |
