Artist History
b-side has been through a lot in its youthful career. Of the five members currently in b-side only Zach, Greg, Stephen and Dave started when the group was formed. Fred Harper no longer plays drums but Chad Bebee steped into Fred's shoes and has steped up in a major way. Since the release of "The Simple Things" the band has been writing and playing non-stop in an effort to build up the following that the first year of b-side created. With new songs, new members, and an even fresher sound b-side has begun to take off in 2002. With shows now in Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee b-side is only beginning it's mission of taking their music out to the "masses." b-side folk union has just recorde 3 songs onto a demo that really shows who b-side is maturing into. After the first cd, b-side was anxious to grow and write and find a sound that was hopefully unique and could set them apart. So, they hooked up with record producer Eric Schabacker and recorded at his studio/mansion outside of Eureka Springs, AR. The result... Beautiful World, More, and a radio friendly Laugh Out Loud were all recorded and the guys couldn't be happier. Check out the demo songs here or on www.b-sidefolkunion.com and go to the media page. |

b-side folk union review
Thursday, March 28th
JR’s Dickson Street Theatre
--Rob Engles
JR’s Dickson Street Theatre continues to deliver great live music on Thursday with a solid performance by local favorites b-side folk union (b.s.f.u.). Their blend of folk rock, world music and improvisations provided listeners with almost three hours of original music and a few of their favorite covers.
They opened with a thundering, tribal-sounding drum, conga and bass intro by Chad Bebbe, Stephen Hunton, and Greg Guillot that soon took on a middle eastern feel when joined by Dave Wilson’s snake charming clarinet lines. The intro evolved into "doality" from their CD release "the simple things." From there, singer-guitarist Zach’s high-energy vocals and guitar play would set the pace for the evening.
If you studied music you could describe b.s.f.u.’s sound as polyrhythmic variations on a particular theme. But speaking as a concert dawg I would call it good old new jam rock.
Song meshed into song, demonstrating b.s.f.u.’s ability to attach melodic guitar tones and vocal harmonies to hard driving bass and intertwined percussion. The cherry on this musical cake was Wilson’s horn parts. Whether on sax or clarinet, Wilson added a distinctive but complimentary taste to the already sweet mix.
A cover of Rusted Roots "Send Me On My Way" filled the floor with dancers, while the slow dance ballad "#41" seemed to glue them there. Add covers of Bob Dylan’s "Hurricane", Led Zeppelin’s "Dyer Maker", and the world/reggae-influenced tunes like "abraham" and "Burn One Down" and you had a true audio feast. I say feast due to the fact the band played two sets and three encores that extended the show time to 2:45 minutes.
b.f.s.f., especially Zach, interacted well with the audience through song introductions and brief stories. They often fell completely into their own groove by dancing, weaving and jumping along to the rhythm.
Throughout the evening, the music was complimented by kaleidoscopic screen projections, excellent lighting and well placed visual effects. This, in no small part, was due to the venue’s attention to performance detail. b.s.f.u. provided a night of inspired music that can really rock your soul. Check ‘em out soon.
