    Press Reviews
Melodic destruction, plain and simple. Featuring ex members of New Day Rising, Montgomery 21 and more, Zyon is a band you need to check out. The CD contains a mixture of melodic slower songs, and some harder, and just as emotional, heavier songs. This band from southern Ontario is definitely on the up and up so take a listen and pick up the CD. (RE-DEFINE RECORDS) Wickedland.com / Instrife.com: Zyon - The Wishing Star: I wasn't expecting much from Zyon, but boy was I surprised. These days, most hardcore bands sound the same to me; get some guitar riffs, fast and heavy drums, and heavy screaming. Zyon is different though. They're like the progressive rock of hardcore. They even have a keyboard to sport. I'd say half of the CD's 50 minutes are purely instrumental. Vocals are a split between screaming and singing. Singing's pretty good but sometimes it sounds a bit forced. Screaming's just over the top, especially when it mixes in with the music. The main thing that takes Zyon to the next level is actually melodies in their music. It's not just a couple of heavy cords over and over again. The instrumental parts are especially fulfilling. Plus there are several acoustic parts in the CD to counter the heavy stuff, a very nice touch that showcases the band's wide range of talent. (5/5)Unrestrained Magazine: One of the more bizarre hardcore related releases I have heard in the last little while. Ontario outfit Zyon are full of sharp mood swings and plenty surprises as their disc "The Wishing Star" proceeds down the tracklisting. An amalgamation of hardcore stylings, ample melodies and some fancy atmospheric keyboard and acoustic guitar work, Zyon produce a very surreal sound that just flows off in various directions. I must commend the band, as they have easily shapeshifted a sound various degrees, managing to find beauty in aggressive music and find passion in what they do. My favorite tracks are "American Made" and "Feasting On The Bilnd". A little hit and miss at times, but overall Zyon's charge comes across as the real deal, even creepy at times. PRP.com - Zyon - The Wishing Star: The opening sequence of this album sets the tone for what is one of the most atmospheric and anthemic records to cross my path. Swirling winds and haunting triangular sounds carry the listener to another place, its almost as if they want to prepare you for the 10 songs that lie ahead. Prepare to be amazed, prepare to make space in your cd collection.Opening song 'American Made' is crying out to the disenchanted with its anthemic chorus "I am american, I am an alien, I am a man and thats what defines me". The music and vocals simmer for the first part of the song only to reach boiling point half way through as if to make there point, and you cant help but take notice as the singer throws himself into a hardcore frenzy and the music takes a decidely harder edge. Unlike most bands who attempt this kind of dynamic Zyon never lose touch with the core themes of the song so it feels more like a natrual transistion rather than disjointed.'New Light' follows the trend of 'American Made' with its varying dynamic. The vocals vary from Bowie esque singing to hardcore gutteral screams with an uplifting sting in its tail. However, the bulk of the album is made up of more melodic slower songs. 'Chasing The Dragon' is an acoustic ballad like song, further displaying the talented musicianship and song writing on a key with A Perfect Circle. The band are obviously inspired by many genres of music which is why this cd is particularly appealing to fans of all music. From the darker, sinister sounds of 'Feasting On the Blind' to the hardcore elements of 'New Light' we begin to get a full picture of what this band has to offer. Whilst the songs towards the end of the record are not as strong as those before it this is still essential for those wanting to broaden there musical horizons. (4 / 5) Brian Webb

A new as yet unnamed band has formed between members of Zyon and Grade. Look out for that early 2003. (This message posted DEC 5-2002)
