Artist History
When the year 1997 was running to it's end songwriter Bart-Jan Antens got together with some of his former music-buddies. Together with former members of 'Salad Bar' and 'The Sunday Project' Bart-Jan formed Zomotta. The band name popped up when watching the movie Raging Bull, whilst drinking not recommendable quantities of Belgian Beer. After their untitled debut album, on which BJ had all his friends jam, BJ decided to form a real band with a couple of them. The reason behind this move was because the debut album was very well received in the regional press. One year later the band recorded a second album, 'The Elephant Musician', in Studio 195 in Wernhout, The Netherlands. 12 Jewels were smashed on tape, which was an opinion shared both by Zomotta and by the press. Several regional and national magazines gave excellent critics to the album. Some of these critics are available in translation on the Zomotta web-site.Zomotta was initially mostly a recording band, but has in time into a powerful live-band. This has, of course, been mostly due to the amount of performances the band gave away. In recent years Zomotta has played in places like Para, Boho, Bibelot, 013 and W2 and has shared the stage with the likes of Tenk, Travoltas and MITCH. Moreover, in 2000 Zomotta was selected out of almost 800 entries to take part in the Dutch National pop price. Zomotta was also successful in reaching the finals in the pop price of the city of Dordrecht, which has yet to take place. Zomotta has furthermore staged performances in a variety of cafes, of which we will spare you the ordeal of having to read them all. What is it that Bart-Jan wants to reach with Zomotta? What is the mission of Zomotta in this day and age dominated by Britney Spears, MC Donald’s, brainless presidents and their ilk?? Play all major national and international festivals? Lots of women grovelling and squirming for attention at their feet? Busloads of groupies following their every step? No? What else then? Very simple: Zomotta demonstrates, like no other band, how a rock band should be in the new millennium. Rocking, steaming, energizing and at the same time soulful, heart-warming and a tremendous amount of enthusiasm are all featuring in this bands music and way-of-life. Zomotta dares to be loud and aggressive in it's music, but also doesn't hesitate to be soft and intriguing. Zomotta might best be described as Pavement, with the attitude similar to The Sex Pistols, Television in a jam wih Oasis and Orange Juice flirting with David Bowie.Book this trashpop sensation from Brabant, The Netherlands and experience what one has called 'Garbage pop' and what yet another labelled as 'outright brilliant'! |

ZOMOTTA - The Elephant Musician cd (apeact)
To be quite honest and straightforward: it's been a long time since I last heard such a strong, entertaining and original debut CD originating from Holland. The Breda based band Zomotta (with some members of the band Salad Bar in it) has in the person of Bart Jan Antens a talented songwriter and characteristic singer in it's band. His way of singing reminds me of one of my favourite bands: The Only Ones. A new Peter Perret has come into existence! In the way of composition the songs have something in common with bands like Pavement and Sebadoh, but this is mainly because of the sound of the guitars. Antens his compositions however contain more energy than the aforementioned bands. What remains to be said more about this album? Twelve adventurous, catchy pop-jewels with a timeless quality.
