Artist History
Born fifth in a family of seven children in Manila,Philippines. Our Dad clearly remembered when Rodel displayed his artistic flair at an early age. He always had pencil in his hand and doodled anything that struck his fancy; he would strum with the guitar and tinker with the piano as well. Before entering show business, Rodel played lead roles in school stage plays; in church, he was a choir member. He earned a gold medal in a national speech competition with a piece entitled "Is God Dead" which he had written himself. Rodel's harboured desire to become a performer was reinforced when he won recognition as the Most Outstanding Talent Discovery for the Year at a talent search sponsored by a popular Manila night club. Within a few months, Rodel was cast as the leading role in two major motion pictures. Demand for his appearance became incessant as Rodel's popularity flourished through the radio and TV variety circuit. Although Rodel had established a solid career as an actor and singer, he left the Philippines to join the family in Canada. From there, he moved to Los Angeles, California. In LA, he had concerts at Ebell Theatre, the Scottish Rite Temple and at the Ambassador Hotel. It was during one of these shows that a talent agent took notice of Rodel and booked him to perform in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and New Mexico. Rodel also performed in Japan and Singapore. After ten years in Los Angeles, California, Rodel returned to the Philippines, long haired and ruggedly stylish, his face still boyish and ethereally ageless. Although there were offers from recording companies, Rodel decided to produce his own album both in English and Tagalog featuring his own compositions. His tagalog song "Lumayo Ka Man" garnered triple platinum status; "Muli", "Kailan Kaya", "Ikaw Pa Lamang" soared to double platinum. When his CD album titled "Once Again" was on its way to platinum status, Rodel got seriously ill and he decided to go to Canada for medical check up. While in Canada, although he was ill, he passed the audition for the Toronto production Miss Saigon. For one year, he portrayed the role of Assistant Commissar and was an understudy for the Commissar. An entertainment manager from Canada got interested to promote Rodel's career in North American mainstream but when the contract was finally drawn and ready for signing, Rodel's illness got worse. He died in Toronto, barely three months after our Dad's death. His last concert was held at John W.H. Bassett Theatre, Toronto, Metro TorontoConvention, in Canada. (Written by Delia, one of Rodel's four sisters) |
