Press Reviews
Coming from the land down under, aptly-monikered Forlorn Suffering is one band whose bio is actually on the level. Steve (vox, programming) and Dave (guitars, bass, programming) are the only two musicians in the band, but they work very well together. Like the bio says, Forlorn Suffering is melodic death metal at the core, but black and doom metal play a largely noticeable part in their music as well. "Internal Torment" is the guys' new demo CD (they released a limited promo in early '99) and features five tracks, a veritable smorgasboard of extreme delicacies. Although the keyboard does play an major role in the music--one I thought I would hate--for the most part, it helps define the atmosphere for each song. The keys sometimes remind me of Type O Negative. Otherwise, Forlorn Suffering's sound is fairly original. The songs are mid-paced for the majority, with a little blast here or some double-bass there. Both are used sparingly as to give the music more power--which it certainly does. Steve's vocals run the gamut from death growls to blackened screams, but sometimes his whispers get on my nerves, particularly in the song "Passing Life", which happens to be one of my favorite tunes. Personally, I think it would be better to whisper only during the first verse. And some work on the vocal timing might help. That's just me and I'm not even in a fucking band, so take that as you will. Lyrically, this is heavy shit. Sure, a lot of extreme metal is based on feelings of hatred and melancholy, but this stuff strikes close to home, at least for me. I don't even know these two metalheads, but they seem to feel pretty much exactly what I do about life. If you aren't depressed before you listen to this disc, you will be by the second track. The sound is decidedly un-demo-like in it's clarity and though a drum machine is used, your mind will be elsewhere when listening to the many layers that make up Forlorn Suffering's music. "Internal Torment" is music for those dominated by thoughts of hatred, disgust, anger and most of all despair. It spans all of these emotions and so many more that it's pointless to even attempt naming them all. I'd recommend this to just about any fan of talented death metal. Besides, if Forlorn Suffering ain't a brutal fucking band name, I don't know what is. Hail! -Goden Eternal FrostHailing from Sydney, in Australia, Forlorn Suffering is a young duo that releases here its first demo CD, produced by Erik, the guitarist of Crucible Of Agony. And contrary to what we could think, no, this isn’t a band of syckos and crazy guys like Sadistik Exekution or Destroyer 666. In fact, without saying that ‘Internal Torment’ is a poetic album, some soft elements and good melodies can found there, the whole being accompanied by some good ideas. And this is also one of the first times that I don’t get bored by a drum machine after two tracks, because that’s done professionally, like the artwork by the way. Apart from that, that’s melodic death/black metal, with two voices: one black metal and screamy voice, the other one being almost death metal. Which makes me think a lot of Necromicon’s ‘Sightveiler’, all the more that all their songs, except ‘Burn In Darkness’, are quite close to this album. Have they copied or not? I don’t know, and anyway, this mini album is quite a sweet suffering! - Thomas Sweet SufferingThis is the first release from Forlorn Suffering, a two piece band from Sydney. The band manages to very successfully (more so than many) combine elements of black and dark death metal with an often slightly doomy edge. The keyboard work is particularly enticing, providing a sweeping symphonic base for slow, dark riffs, extreme vocals, black whispers and haunting melodies. The more brutal parts of the demo in contrast with the symphonic elements are definitely a highlight as there is a good depth of variation in the music which maintains interest. Overall Forlorn Suffering have definitely achieved a good style for them selves with this strong debut. The recordings main downfall is the drum machine. The music would sound so much better with a real drummer. Despite this Forlorn Suffering is an Australian band with a great deal of promise and worth checking out if dark and symphonic death metal appeals to you. 3 out of 5 -The Necromortician, Necrozine |
