NICODEMUS "TALES OF THE LOVELORN AND NECROMANTIC" Dark Throne Music6.5 / 8I used to always say that U.S. black metal is (for the most part) utter crap and light years behind its European counterpart, but I take it all back, as finally even U.S. black metal fans have a band to be proud of. Nicodemus excels particularly in the one aspect where most U.S. bands have failed up to this point, namely dark gothic moodiness. Utilizing a drum machine and a vast array of synths and samplers, they create dark gothic soundscapes that emanate a truly vampire-like nocturnal mood. On top of that we get the usual aggressive guitar work and a mixture of screaming BM vocals and clean gothic male vocals. To be honest, the gothic element of this element is so pronounced at times this sounds like a black metal version of Oneiroid Psychosis, believe it or not (as there is a real similarity between the two bands' approach to the gothic element of their sound). There is even quite a lot of straightforward gothic industrial elements on this album, so it should have quite a lot of cross-over potential. Don't be afraid though, Nicodemus are after all predominantly a metal band, so there is plenty of aggressive guitars and drums here and the quality of the guitar hooks and synth melodies is pretty high. The guitar could be maybe a bit better produced (not as thick as let's say Dimmu Borgir), but it manages to come through strongly enough to make an impact, while the drum machine and the keyboards sounds excellent (obviously, since they're all digital). Elements of Cradle of Filth are visible as well, but in the end Nicodemus manages to create a pretty original sound and the strong songwriting present throughout the whole album makes this one of the better debut albums I've ever heard.
