Press Reviews
From New Haven Advocate: Scene & Heard by Chris Arnott, Aug 30, 2001: "A diehard regular at Cafe 9's Beatnik 2000, Taylor - of Fun Devils, The Bling, and the defunct (but wait!) Hank - writes " Hank guitarist and main riff writer Wil Speer is back in town for a cameo appearance, from San Diego. We are performing at the Village Pub on Whalley Ave. on Sunday, Sept 2. Starting time will be around 8 p.m. with special guest Greg Kennedy to open. This show will give us an opportunity to give away a demo from our recording sessions, which ended last June. Hank last played on June 7, 2000 at the Tune Inn. There will be four different demos handed out randomly. Each demo represents the favorite choices of each band member. So consider this a "Demo Release Party." tHanks, Taylor" / Music Notes By Catherine Byun Published 06/01/00 It was a sad week for the New Haven music scene. Summer is supposed to be a time for barbecues, skinny-dipping and outdoor concerts, not a time for bands to break up and cool places to close their doors. But then again, there really isn't ever a season for breakups and shutdowns. They are suck-ass situations any time of the year. First on the list of gloom and doom is Hank, breaking up after five years. Guitarist and songwriter Wil Speer is going home to San Diego, leaving the three other members to pursue other projects. Taylor Joyner, lead vox and lyricist, calls Wil "the essence of the band," and Hank just can't be Hank without him. The band is finishing up its first (and last) CD, though it's doubtful that it will be out by the time Hank plays its last show at the Tune Inn on Wednesday, June 7 - Music Notes Local music gossip and happs, 4/14-4/21 By Craig Gilbert Published 04/15/99 Show review time: Bands: Hank and Points East. Where & When: cafe nine on March 31. Crowd: People coming and going all night. Decent size for a Wednesday night, an overlapping mix of "fans" and "friends." Descriptive: Both bands have a Pearl Jammy quality to their sounds, with PE leaning in a Creed-ish direction and Hank swaying toward a Kravitz rock groove. Eavesdropping Quote Of the Evening: None. Last Word: Both bands were tight and kicked some above-average rock. |
