Press Reviews
This is modern rock but I was hooked long before I noticed anything except what a passionate, Tom Pettyish rock'n'roll record this Baltimore band had made. All great insurgent rock'n'roll uses essentially prayerful metaphors, and "Home Again" simply reverses the usual relation: You can easily mistake it for a love song-- and I wouldn't argue if the band told me it was about love. With its ringing guitars, great chorus ("On the golden streets of heaven / You and I walk hand in hand"), sly little organ lick, a vocal that's just nasal enough, "Home Again" is compulsively listenable. Both Forever Moon and you ought to know that finding rock music this good is why doing stuff like this can be the best part of my job. They’re one band here that's twice as good as any of its cited influences.

It's always nice to receive an indie demo that showcases some actual talent. Forever Moon is one of those. A five-piece band out of Baltimore, Forever Moon was born after the five members spent several summers together working at youth camps as counselors. It provided them with an opportunity to perform together, and they found that their talents and sounds meshed very well. The group quickly decided that they really wanted to pursue their music together.
After performing with Smalltown Poets, the group became fast friends with some of their members. Poets' own Matt Goldman produced FM's first 5-song demo, self-titled Forever Moon. The band showcases strong acoustic rhythms and melodic harmonies, culminating in a sound that has drawn comparisons to Toad the Wet Sprocket and Vertical Horizon. Whatever you want to call it, it works. It's not enough to play simple modern rock music; FM chooses to go for a stronger sense of artistry, weaving in introspective lyrics (by lead vocalist Scott Patterson) and impressive musicianship. The songwriting is surprisingly mature (for a group so young), and the music is well-produced and played.
Pros: Those Smalltown influences come through clearly (especially on "Home Again"), but don't drown out this group's already-established sense of musical identity. A fantastic find.
Cons: None.
The Verdict: Record labels take notice: Forever Moon definitely has a bright future ahead. I can't wait to hear a full-length album from them.
My Score: 4.5 stars
