Artist History
As one of the first women in jazz, Ella got her big break at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, NY in 1934. In 1935, Ella began recording with Chic Webb’s orchestra. When Webb died, Ella led the band. After she was signed to Decca records, she played with greats, such as The Ink Spots, Louis Jordan, and Dizzy Gillespie. Ella went on to have a very long extremely successful career playing with all the great jazz legends on many different labels. Ella Fitzgerald is still known as one of the best swing/scat singers of all time. |
