Artist History
I began playing bongos when I was around 8 years old. I used to listen to Genesis, Yes, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Modern Talking and all the 80’s Techno Pop bands famous at the time. I used to jam with an acoustic drum kit after school when I lived in Switzerland. Olivier, a friend of mine at the time, showed me his Synsonic Drums, a 4-pad percussive device with a built-in 4-track sequencer. I was able to play on top of a metronome bass drum and was also able to accentuate my analog-white noise hi-hat- to me it was more than a toy! I recorded my first songs with my brother Mark using a ghetto-blaster, a 1.5 second Casio sampler with presets, a 4-channel mixer and lots of other gear I was renting in order to learn and use as many units as possible. I then purchased a Fostex analog multitrack and some pedal effects. Mark and I were so inspired by industrial/gothic bands, we used to rent a lot of movies and sample them to obtain the best ambience to spice up our music. Over the years, we bought more professional equipment such as Roland, Korg, Ensoniq, Alesis, Boss, Yamaha and many other brands until we recorded a project, called SKULL FRACTURE, with a vocalist named Thomas Sinclair. There were also two guitar players and another artist, Claude Charnier (HEADSCAN), for additional engineering and computer sequencing. We had many styles; industrial, cyber trash, rave, and new age/ambient themes, and during that time our music played on local radio stations (CKUT 90.3 FM and CISM 89.3 FM). We opened for a reputable band from Vancouver called “Waiting For God” and also for a Swedish act named “Covenant”. We played and sold tapes until our lead singer left to focus on solo recordings. I also began recording many tracks on my own, not always clean but usually very textured. I had two other solo projects, CREATURE ANDROGYNE and REBIRTH, but never released them like I did with SKULL FRACTURE having TERRA VOX as a Montreal Label. Later in 1999 Mark and I pressed 100 compact discs under the name of NOVA SATURN (Mark Momtaz) FEATURING EROS (Alex Momtaz). Now I am using a PC to recycle my old tracks and the main objective is to promote a few excerpts on the Internet. I hope one day that my music will be used in movies, TV commercials, documentaries or video games/tutorials. My musical background was influenced by my grandmother (she used to be a piano teacher), my brother Mark who graduated at Trebas Institute, and all the new age/classical composers that I have been listening for the past 32 years. Furthermore, my current project may interest anyone who listens to Tangerine Dream, Enya, or Michael Stearns. I run a very ample schedule nowadays; aside from composing I presently study in a health field learning about home care visiting, such as helping the elderly with daily tasks in their homes. This however does not interfere with the leisure hours I devote to my one true passion- ambient music. |
