Press Reviews
Los Angeles quartet Agnes Gooch, named for some sort of boogieman character rather than the secretary played by Rosalind Russel in Auntie Maine, wears its heart on its sleeve. Its music contains no hidden agendas or intellectualizations. Instead, like Redd Kross, the band treats listeners to a roar that captures the essence of the "pop song about a girl" vibe, and gooses that sentimentality with a catharsis of loud guitars. As a result, Agnes Gooch is able to inject a certain sexuality into its songs, getting the girls with Mat Baker's yearning voice and keepingthe boys' attention with its loud-at-any-volume hooks. A well-paced album, Blind does a good job mixing the loud and the quiet with the fast and slow. Rockers to watch for are "Baby In Green," with its catchy chorus, the dynamic "Movie" and the crashing rush of "Pretty" On the quiet side. "Rock & Roll Star" hardly has the posturing you would expect from such a title, and "Wish" takes a subtle approach, revealing its depth after repeated listens. |
