Artist History
Formed in Santa Barbara in 1990, Wind Cave started as a vehicle for the songs of a departed friend, Ted ‘Buale’ Morrow. Out of this original batch of tunes, the blueprint for the Wind Cave style was formed. Starting as a four piece unit the band gigged extensively in their first year, logging nearly eighty (80) shows in the first nine months. They celebrated their first year together by recording their initial release, "Listen and You Will Hear...". Soon after, the band undertook the ambitious tack of playing shows 'on the road'; this was to be the start of a touring adventure which would last close to four years! By 1993, the group had matured into a full-time six member touring outfit.Winning the North Bay (San Francisco) Battle of the Bands enabled them to once again record a full length album, "Cave in Your Head". From there, the band used the new release to travel further and play venues across the Western US. By 1994 Wind Cave had become a favorite on the festival circuit. In addition they were playing 180 shows a year (mostly one-nighters) and boasted a mailing list of close to 2,500 names. Relocating their operation to Santa Cruz, California, the band took root in the area's richly creative and socially conscious community. This gave the band opportunities to give back to causes and ideas they felt strongly about - in turn, those who benefited came to consistently support Wind Cave's efforts in spreading a conscious message. In 1995, after two tours of the Southwest, Wind Cave was approached by professional management who secured them a development deal with GRP/Blue Thumb Records. After a series of showcases and a demo recording session with legendary producer/engineer Bill Schnee, Wind Cave was released from its commitment.Continuing to tour in the wake of a brush with fame, personal obstacles appeared which began to hamper their musical growth.By spring of 1996, the band had quit touring on a full-time basis, concentrating on song writing during long sessions at their rehearsal space in Santa Cruz. When these sessions came to a close, the band members decided to give their project a much-needed rest.Playing occasional shows over the last three years, the individual members have taken on various pursuits and careers. All members are still active musicians, although no one is a full-time paid professional.Recently, the entire group reunited for a private show in Chico, California. Experiencing the joy of once again playing together for their family and friends proved cathartic, and plans were started for release of a compilation of live performances culled from the archives of over 100 taped shows. In addition, tentative plans have made for a series of concerts timed with the completion of the live album. Looking to the future, Wind Cave remains a creative entity unique in its’ vision and structure – time will tell if more compelling art will emanate from this musical endeavor. |
