Artist History
Rising from the ashes of several of the Bay Areas's favorite club bands, the Brilliants came together in 1994 to prove that a band in love with lush harmonies, driving guitars, and fingerpoppin' tunes could rule the world again. They have spent way too much time in their beautiful West Oakland home studio. The members of The Brilliantines hail from all corners of the musical globe, and have played in a variety of musical settings. Robert Daniels grew up in Alton, Illinois under the shadow of that town's most famous citizen, Robert Wadlow (the Alton Giant, at an astounding 8' 11"). His own giant guitar technique was honed on the midwest bar circuit, playing Rick Nielsen to many a would-be Robin Zander. Local boy John Messier rocks the tubs in local faves Red Planet, while Ron Silva has perfected his own brand of Pretty Things/Ray Charles goodness as leader of San Diego legends the Crawdaddys and SF's own Monarchs. Jon Strickland grew up far away from all this in Melbourne, Australia, on a diet of the Go-Betweens, AC/DC, and Slim Dusty; he managed to come out OK anyway. Jon most recently played and sang for Oakland's the Uncalled Four.In their short career, the Brilliantines have shared billing with Cake, the Connells, Chixdiggit, the Plimsouls, Chris Whitley, and Sweetwater, as well as local faves Actionslacks, the Loved Ones, Engine 88, the Sneetches, the Groovie Ghoulies, and many others wothy of mention. They have received much support from college stations KALX and KUSF, and a handful of plays on KITS and KCRW. They have also learned to smile at the audience. The Brilliantines take their name from some stuff Robert used to put in his hair. |
