Artist History Subsonic were formed in September 1997 when school friends Bill and Ben met up again after university. Guitarist Bill had written many songs at university and recorded rough demo versions onto a tape. Upon returning home he gave the tape to Ben who liked what he heard and began writing some lyrics. The completed songs were recorded using a 4-track recorder and aired to friends. The response was amazing! People could not believe that what they were hearing was recorded, mixed and produced in two bedrooms using only the most basic of equipment. The hunt was on for a bass player - enter Will, an old friend of Ben's, who picked up the vibe of the songs and mastered the basslines. The whole catalogue of tracks was then re-recorded by the completed line-up and a three track EP, the ‘Lies Inside EP’, was released in October 1998. This was used as an entry tape for the 1998 'Band Of The Year' competition held in Chesterfield. Subsonic made it to the semi-finals after beating competition from around 20 other bands, without having played a gig. The semi-finals were held at The Winding Wheel in Chesterfield. Unfortunately they didn't make it through to the final but were pleased with their first live performance. The band grew in confidence and more songs were written. Further gigs were played around Chesterfield and also at the Battle of The Bands and Devonshire Green Festival in Sheffield. After a summer break, work began on recording the debut album - 'sub-vers-if-lan-gwij-sus-pex' which was released in March 2000. Instead of jumping on the ‘bandwagon’ (pun intended) and forming another bog-standard indie/rock band, Subsonic have defined their own musical style - "a raging guitar noise best described as twisted, psychedelic rock." They do admit to being influenced by a wide variety of music but are adamant that these are only influences and not directions!!
