Artist History
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Nathan Kessey originally met lead guitarist/singer Jerry Leonhart and bassist Silas Hoffman, and began playing together while still in high school. This band, which was named Serum, was originally formed in Fairbanks, AK, in the summer of 1998, when the three picked up drummer Jov Luke. The bands unique mixture of blues, pop, alternative, jazz and hard rock influences created their own catchy and highly recognizable signature sound, and quickly gained them the attention of local radio stations, club owners and other musicians, and resulted in an immediate and extremely loyal following, which grew quickly and continues to grow consistently. In the winter of 1998, the band recorded their first demo. It was immediately picked up by local radio stations and gained Serum major radio airplay, with the singles "Your World" and "Pour Down," as well as the opportunity to open for such acts as Soul Asylum, Sebastian Bach, D.O.A. and Peter Mulvey, among others. Serum continued to win various battles, contests and awards, as well as performing at benefit concerts, outdoor concerts and local shows, where they became renound for their live stage show and explosive live sound, often compared to the likes of the Goo Goo Dolls, Creed, and the Stone Temple Pilots, among others. In the summer of 1999, Serum recorded a 13-song release entitled "Chemical Dream." When the cd was finally released in April of 2000, after several months of production-related delays, the cd sold over 200 copies in it’s first weekend alone, and "Stand Corrected," the first single off the album, was placed on daily rotation at 104.7 fm The Edge, Fairbanks’ premiere rock station. Serum sold over 500 cd’s in the Fairbanks area alone, and the number grew towards 1000 in all. After the band moved to Minneapolis in November of 2000, the members grew apart and eventually split from one another, fulfulling the VH1 Behind the Music requirement of hitting rock bottom and going back to their roots... |
