Artist History
Alex Mackey first began to play the piano while in the first grade. Taking lessons off and on over the next nine years, he still couldn’t read music when he finally quit in the ninth grade. That’s where his interest in piano began. He started playing songs he heard on the radio by sounding them out. Once in college at Brigham Young University, he saw someone play a different version of a popular hymn and thought to himself, “That can’t be too hard.” He started to rearrange 'I Am a Child of God', which took almost four months to be able to play well in front of an audience. After playing this first arrangement in numerous church meetings, more and more requests came for rearranging other hymns.Ten years and thousands of hours at the piano later, he has released his first full-length CD appropriately titled Finally. Alex was born in South Carolina, graduated from BYU in 1996 with a degree in Advertising and is currently working at an ad agency in Santa Monica, California. |

Press Reviews
By Jefferson Fairbanks--Alex Mackey's first CD Release "Fianlly" is a compilation of hymns ten years in the making. Each song is a musical interpretation of a Latter-day Saint hymn. If you've ever known a pianist who takes a hymn and embellishes it with musical elements, you have a good idea of what's on this CD.Alex has arranged the following hymns on the CD: "I Am a Child of God", "Teach Me to Walk in the Light", "Abide with Me!", "I Need Thee Every Hour", "Lead Kindly Light", "Mearer My God to Thee", "Our Savior's Love", "I Know That My Redeemer Lives" and "Sweet Hour of Prayer." He also adds a song of his own which he wrote for a friend's wedding, entitled, "Andy's Song."My favorite song on this CD is "Teach Me to Walk in the Light." Your favorite song will most likely be the hymn which is already your favorite. This is because Alex does such a nice job of playing each hymn reverently and with a musical interpretation, which is both interesting and elegant. The CD is entirely instrumental piano, although there are subtle string accompaniments on some of the pieces. It is perfect listening music for a Sunday morning or any situation where the spirit of reverence is desired. |
