    Artist description
the mantarays...gentle giants of the sea? not here. space is rock. drifted and delayed. stars explode into formation…what the hell are we talking about? well, sorry. there’s no mystery or intrigue. we’ll give it to you straight…we’re six “musicians/thrill seekers” making music a la space rock massacre persuasion. yeah we all like different music, but that doesn’t give our own music a real unique combination. we hate it when people put that crap in their bios.the bottom line is, we have fun doing what we do. fortunately for us, people who come to our shows end up having a good time too. that’s about it. the moment we start to take ourselves too seriously, it all goes to hell...(here’s where you decide if you want to keep reading).....some of us have been in other bands. Cornelius was in honey tree and infrared. Torch is in infrared (www.mp3.com/infrared) and was in lumiere (www.mp3.com/lumiere). (it makes us feel special to think people might have heard of them)the mantarays, however, are a fairly new band, (band bio cliché alert) but we’ve already managed to draw a loyal following and turn some heads.....we were recently selected as one of the top bands in utah to compete at the South by Southwest showdown to Austin finals at the Zephyr club in SLC.....the music itself draws from such apparent influences as the jesus and mary chain, the dandy warhols, spacemen3, the brian jonestown massacre, and loads of other sheet. our music is essentially spacepop with a dash of sedative drone rock, and a twist of shoegaze britpop.....we’ve already played a hefty line up of gigs so far this year, including one at kilby court (SLC), burt’s tiki lounge (SLC), sundance film festival (Park City), the zephyr club (SLC) and the wrapsody.....we could go on and on trying to get you to give a crap, but we’d prefer to let our music speak for itself. (that was probably pretty cliché too. sorry) please give us a listen - thanks.

    Press Reviews
“Entering in at No. 1 on my Favorite SXSW Band I've Never Heard Before chart was The Mantarays, a swirling, guitar-laden wall of New York throb that was dense and hypnotic. Unfortunately, the judges didn't seem to get it, scoring the band lower than the rest. Granted, either you love this kind of Luna/Mercury Rev/Yo La Tengo din (like me), or you hate it. But The Mantarays should have at least gotten style points for the back-projected movies, fluorescent giveaway rings and cool black leather threads, right? Never mind.” - Bill Frost - Salt Lake City Weekly........."The Mantarays...rock that gluts itself in guitar feedback. The grooviest part of The Mantarays is musical madness that works. Whacked guitar feedback and clever use of gadgetry, producing a ruckus that sounds like a bandsaw meeting up with an old 'Pole Position' video game on the fritz. Cool stuff. Savegly mutated guitar lines sound like a horn section coming through a busted Victrola - and I mean that in a good way. Brash, insensitive and irreverant." - Shawn Hammond - Frequent contributor to Guitar Player Magazine
