Artist History
Bio: who are six degrees? Six Degrees first formed three years ago under the name of 'Nearly-vana'. The line up was: Tommy Stubbington on guitar, Julian Grant on bass, Luke Waterfield on drums and Alan Morrison screaming. As with all Nirvana tribute bands we fizzled out after playing an appallingly embarrassing rendition of 'Smells like Teen Spirit' to our poor classmates who were remarkably tactful about the whole thing. Although common sense would, and should have told us to stop, we carried on, but without Alan who has now become a thoughtful and profound philosopher. For two years we battled with no singer and no material, and come to think of it, no talent; a successful punk combination was the only possible outcome. During one fruitless rehearsal, Julian took to the mic and surprised Luke and Tommy with his raucous but somehow tuneful 'singing'. It was there and then decided that Julian 'no dick' Grant was to front the band. Then Luke embarked on one of his usually pointless projects: make an attractive female join the band. Much to Tommy and Julian's surprise this worked and Ellen Parmavellas became the fourth sixth Degree. This addition had an immediate impact and we got offered our first gig after our first rehearsal with her. This caused us to have to write six songs in three weeks; it was a challenge but we made it. One of Julian's long term projects is to learn Greek, so that he could impress Ellen, eventually leading to sex. Luke's main aim is to play at the Cambridge folk festival. Tommy battles on, fitting larger and larger objects into his mouth. Ellen's main aim is to impress big men.

Press Reviews
The three-boy, one-girl Brixton teenagers play melodious rock with deep, political meaning, a singer obviously inspired by Nick Drake and... hang on, no, I've made a mistake - 6 Degrees play really loud hardcore punk with no trousers. This is no school band whose diet consists of post-grunge or nu-metal, this is a tight-as-a-gnat's-chuff certified racket which, from the word "twofreefour!", feels like being hit by a bus. And a really fucking big, red double-decker at that.
Their baby-faced singer has a self-mocking, dry sense of humour and a flair for showmanship to put his po-faced contemporaries to shame. While the songs seem to lack anything in the way of tunes (hey, this is hardcore, it doesn't matter), the way in which 6 Degrees play with conviction and style makes them far more listenable than it looks on paper (sorry, screen). A punk label's wet dream. (Adie Nun - April 2001) |
