    Artist History
Ok Tokyo is a mix of organic tones from live drums, synths, and guitar with the electronic sounds of samplers and sequencers. Whilst the bands style is hard to pin down, it draws from a wide range of influences including ambience, drum'n'bass, electro and jazz. The Ok Tokyo line-up consists of Matt Roesner (vocals, guitar, samples and synths) and Jason Davy (percussion). Early in 2001 the band released an EP called "relapsation" which was received with a positive response from the Australian Music Industry. The EP was produced by Matt Roesner and Rob Grant at PoonsHead Studios. So far "relapsation" has achieved the following: -the songs "fluxivity" and "isometrica" have received airplay on Triple J, SBS radio and other community stations across Australia. -the video for "isometrica" directed by Roly Skender has been seen on Channel 31 and RAGE. -"isometrica" was shortlisted in the WAM song contest electro category. In the live arena the band has played gigs throughout West Australia, including shows around their southwest home and also at well known Perth city venues, helping the band establish a local following, and also develop their live show that ranges from mellow acoustic arrangements through to live sonic experimentation where even the band don't know where the song is headed. April 2002 will saw ok tokyo release "staples and glue", a new EP that explores a mellow electro acoustic sound with tinges of jazz, ambient and tribal beats throw-in. Rob Grant co-produced the EP at poonshead studio with help from the band. "staples and glue" was partially funded by ARTSWA and is released on static sensitive records. Songs from "staples and glue" have received airplay on triple j and other alternative stations in Australia. The track "keep upright" was also used in the Sound Spaces installation as part of the Totally Huge New Music Festival. see tura events for more details.

O'K TOKYO - RELAPSATION A very cool ep from O'k Tokyo, a West Australian based band, with the majority of instruments & the vocals done by Matt Roesner, the remainder by guest musicians. The sound here varies somewhat, but the larger number of tracks are quite electronic in feel & there's more than a couple of highlights here.Opener "Body Electric" has a somewhat urgent feel to it, while others like "This Confusion We Are In" bring to mind cross pollenation of funk & electro-fusion, some great sampling & electronic effects filling out 3 bonus tracks, the pick of which is "Protomode".Highlight for me is the somewhat spacey, tripped out feel of "Pablo Dali", which really hits the mark in no uncertain manner, Matt's vocals pretty much sealing the deal. It's a wonder that more people don't know about this ep, but now you do, check it out.hEARd magazine by terry allen nov 2000 "It is not a very complex soundscape we're presented. Simple sounds, simple arrangements, simple buildup, simple vocals. But it is not boring. The arrangement of sounds, because this is more about sounds than about harmonic music as such, is surprisingly good at times. Although some rather common techniques and samples are being used, they don't sound all that common. Strange?" gods of music reviewed by Alexander JohannesenFor what appears to be a totally self-produced, debut relase this 5-track EP is impressive. An entirely electronic affair, Relapsation makes use of lots of drums, with keys and basslines supporting the vocal focus of the songs. Spoken whispers, sweetly sung passages & distorted angsty monotone, matt roesner's voice varies greatly in both style & quality of delivery. Standout track 'Pablo Dali' is probably a good indication of the general mood of the EP - a mix of subtle keyboard melodies & slightly tortured vocal delivery over dynamic & varied instrumentation. Dynamics play a vital role on Relapsation - clever use of sounds & textures results in an ever-changing impact on the ears. Sparse keys give way to trancey beats which in turn submit to a brief onslaught of huge drum sounds & instrumentation to create impressive dramatics. 'Fluxivity' has a Radiohead-ish feel to it, probably a result of the vocal delivery. Other tracks provide glimpses of other vocal influences (Trent Reznor must have made his mark in there somewhere) but Relapsation is not "sounds like" music - this is an original collection of songs supported by intelligent sequencing. This is not disposable pop music or doof by any means. Relapsation will take a few listens. It's certainly not party music & there is no surplus of in-your-face melody. OK Tokyo could even be called indulgent or introspective any of those terms that are often rolled out for artists who don't fit in a neat little pidgeon hole. But, if you like a bit of angst with your beats, this could be for you. reviewer: greg hosking bubblehead ezine
