Artist History
Medicine Hat is a three-piece energetic pop-punk band from Denton, Texas. The band consists of guitarist/vocalist Pete Boonpattrawong, bassist/backup vocalist Mark Wolffarth, and drummer Matt Koch. Before Medicine Hat was found, Pete, Mark, and Matt spent a few years together playing in various garage bands such as Dark Ellipse and Flux. During the Dark Ellipse and Flux years, Pete, Matt, and Mark were joined by many musician friends who had come and gone. In the fall of 1998 Flux broke up, and the three went their separate ways. After one year of separation, Pete, Mark, and Matt decided to reunite again. This time they were headed towards creating their own punk scenes. In the fall of 1999, the three decided to call themselves Medicine Hat, named after a peaceful city in Alberta, Canada. At the time Medicine Hat also consisted of two other members, Steve Swanson (bass) and Christie Veal (lead vocalist). After six months, Christie decided to leave the band due to seldom opportunities to practice with the band and other personal reasons. A few months later, the band decided to let Steve go because of the differences between the band's punk style and his preferred musical genre. The band thought that Steve was better off playing for a local symphony orchestra as he was before joining Medicine Hat. Mark, formerly a guitarist, took over Steve's position, and Pete, formerly a backup vocalist, took over Christie's as Medicine Hat developed into a pop-punk trio. Medicine Hat has been performing around the North Texas area and is seeking to play at more performances on the road. Medicine Hat's song "Answering Machine" has been hovering around the top 40 of mp3.com's garage chart for the past few months, peaking at number 10 (number 1 in Texas). Answering Machine is also featured on Luckscum Record's Denton Band Compilation (released April 2001) and DAM's (Dallas Area Music) compilation CD. Nowadays, Medicine Hat has been playing with and opening for other well-known local (Dallas-Fort Worth) bands such as Radiomotive, Twin Jewels, Cold Fuzion, Plasma Jack, and many more. |
