Press Reviews
DEVIANT SPECIES 'HATCH' (ZEROTONIN RECORDS, UK) reviews: IMPLANT magazine, UK, issue 17, October 2000 Released on their own Zerotonin label, Deviant Species unleash their debut album "Hatch". Santos de Castro and Paul Wright deserve all the success and respect they get, having released all their own material to date. "Hatch" bears the fruits from their psychedelic tree, a tree that gets stronger with each yearÕs growth and this will certainly not disappoint those whoÕve followed their progress over the last couple of years. Seven tracks are on offer including new mixes of "Bilboan Trance", "Jughead", "Aym" and "Intruder" which happily sit alongside new material like "Psyclops" and "The Eel", so prepare yourself for a meeting with the one-eyed demon that has been hatched by this Deviant Species. This is the "Big One" for these two as they take you on a roller-coaster ride of trance, thereÕs no let up as the twisted sounds hurtle out of the speakers with devastating effect. If you havenÕt heard Deviant Species yet then I certainly advise you to and this is certainly a good place to start. F'da F'da PEEK magazine, UK, net issue, September 2000 The past has given me the pleasure to review music coming out the Deviant Species studio, but up until now, it has only been tasters in the form of white label 12", this time I have a whole album! Essentially, if you have already managed to get your hands on the Deviant Species 12" you will not really find anything new here, Psyclops and the Eel being the only two fresh tracks. However the remixes of the previous 12" tracks into album mixes has produced some exciting results - Bilboan Trance being the best. The album mix has added to it a bite and power, that once you have heard it, you can never imagine living without. However I do not want such a small criticism to envelope this review. What Paul and Santos (Deviant Species) have is something very special - an ability to tap into the very heart of your psychedelic soul.??. Each track is a journey, from its ambient mellow beginning through to the intensity of its essence and back out at the end, virtually intact. As a first album I am very impressed. It is tightly mastered, structured and powerful. Through all the initial 12's that Deviant Species I noticed a development in sound and production, and this is a good landmark for them to lay. Again, if these boys carry on the way they are doing, they will go far. Freaky BobUPFRONT magazine, UK, issue 4, Sept/Oct 2000 No strangers to the psychedelic scene 'Deviant Species' are going it alone. This is their first album release on their own label. A quality album for fans of the dark side and not for the faint-hearted. So watch out Skywalker, 'cos the name says it all!! Andy McGuire |
