    Artist History
WOULD formed about 5 years ago when Bobby, Mike, and Mason Otberg started jamming in Bobby's spare bedroom. The three played along with a drum machine until they met Tim, who was 15 at the time. Immediately they went into a writing frenzy. Practicing four nights a week, they quickly accrued upwards of 20 songs and had many more in the works. After auditioning several vocalists, the band decided on Chad Martin, who wrote lyrics quickly. The band was gigging within a month. They quickly acquired a respectable following in their hometown of Grand Junction, CO. They played regularly at local venues such as the Pour House, the Chameleon Club, and the Avalon Theater, performed at “Roachfest” (a local college music festival) two years in a row, and even ventured to the eastern slope of Colorado to play at the 15th Street Tavern. But the band’s best shows were self-promoted concerts and parties at the warehouse where they practiced in Grand Junction. In late 1997, Mason left WOULD for personal reasons and forced the band to reevaluate their sound. The music had been based mostly on technical and difficult riffs featuring multiple guitar harmonies. To attain a fuller sound with one guitar, the band developed a 'less notes, more groove' approach and made a giant step in the right direction. Most of the old songs were retired and picked apart for the heaviest and grooviest riffs. Energized by their tighter, heavier sound, WOULD recorded their first CD in 1998 with the help of Matt, who had played with Bobby earlier in another local band. WOULD had already had great success with tapes and T-shirt sales, and the CDs (a 5-song, self-titled EP) began to go quickly when blessed disaster struck. Chad decided to leave the band a month after the CD was complete, and Mike, frustrated by the news, said he needed some time off. Determined to rebuild the band, Tim and Bobby asked Matt, the producer of their first album, to sing for WOULD. Matt auditioned, and they were blown away. He apparently could scream the hair off a gofer’s balls from 50 yards. And being a writer as well as a musician, he rewrote their songs with a sense of structure and meaning Chad had never achieved. For the remainder of 1999, the band auditioned many bass players, but weren't able to find anyone who could replace Mike. He was just plain good, and they played well together. The band continued to write, and each song seemed better than the last. They knew it was time. They began recording another CD (the demo) and sent Matt on a mission to retrieve their bass player. Mike wisely returned at gunpoint with little resistance. They are now tighter than ever, both musically and personally. Listen closely, and know they are baring their souls. This is their life.
