Artist description
In 1999, two local musicians, felt a void in the music Industry. At that time, Vocalist and Producer, Sevan Vagenius, along with Drummer Mick Vern formed the SMG Allstars to fill this void.
Sevan and Mick incorporated the talents of Bassist Milo Burns, Guitarists Mr. E and J., along with backup singer Nikki Y, and The SMG ALLSTARS started their sonic mission.
After a year and a half of touring, a 5 song EP and tons of hard work, the band released all of their emotions into their first full length CD, “The Nervous Illness of the Last Man on Earth”. This album takes listeners on a journey through a range of emotions and images rarely felt in this age of processed pop bands and angst ridden “made for MTV” Metal bands. |

The SMG Allstars' latest CD shows effort to branch into new areas
By Bob Craig
SMG Allstars’ first CD, “Even Bigger Than the Real Thing,” was a rocking, power-packed effort reminiscent of the mid-to-late 1980s rock groups that dominated radio airplay.
“The Nervous Illness of the Last Man on Earth,” the band’s sophomore effort, still resounds with an ‘80s influence, but branches into other areas than the straightforward power-pop styling of the first CD.
Lead singer Sevan Vagenius has an outstanding rock voice, backed by Nikki Y, that firmly grounds the entire band. This, combined with the power chords of rhythm guitarists J and Mr. E, the bass of Milo Burns and the solid drumming of Mick Vern, gives the band a powerful presence in the recording studio.
In the style of The Tubes and The Romantics, SMG Allstars reaches for a party feel while touching all the essential bases.
Opening in similar fashion to “The Real Thing” with a quirky introduction piece, “The Nervous Illness” quickly distances itself from the band’s earlier effort with an increasing jerkiness of rhythm, delving into music filled with guitar riffs reminiscent of Van Halen that run through songs accompanied by strong bass lines.
“M” is an acoustic ballad, “Little Hell” smacks of REM’s cover of “King of the Road” and “Salt Water” is the requisite power-pop love song, complete with piano lead-in and grinding, closing epic chords.
“Taken for Granted” is one of the CD’s most interesting tunes. It boasts a nice, jazzy guitar-riff opening and catchy bass line, filled with some tight drumming that gradually opens into a nice rock song.
“A Sure Thing” and “Wake Up” hit closest to the sound on “The Real Thing,” making the listener almost want to bounce around the room, but these songs are intermingled with some overly long and less-powerful tunes, such as “Untitled in G” and “Something” that really slow the CD’s momentum.
“Better Than Nothing” also rocks hard, but more like that of early 1990s trios such as Green Day.
Any group’s second CD is tough to pull off, mixing fan expectations with the desire to grow artistically. SMG Allstars’ latest effort contains enough of the pop-funk style that grounded its first disc to keep fans satisfied, but plenty of experimentation that might signal what direction the band is headed in the future.
The answer certainly lies in CD No. 3.
