    Artist History
Forming in the winter of 1999 from the ashes of several hard working, but modestly successful bands from the philadelphia area, Pain Within is an ever growing entity of emotional metal chaos. After the most well known of the background bands, Ubisunt, recorded two popular CD's and eventually disbanned, the forever tight rythmn section of Jim Weiss and Ray Tang decided to keep their creative fury going and began the tedious search for a suitable lineup to complete their new musical project. Local guitarist Greg Montijo was all the while perfecting his unique style of aggressive metal that can only be described as being intensly precise, and was definitly achieved by a self taught, hard working musician. When Greg tried out for the still forming project that Jim and Ray had started, it constructed the basis for what would become Pain Within. But this would come about only after many trials and tribulations. For close to three years of auditioning, personal losses and dozens of potential additions, Keith Nolan took the step from being the bass player and backing vocalist for the hardcore start-ups Lucky To Be, to sculpting his vocal onslaught to fit the bill for the highly experimental metal outfit that soon became the first four piece incarnation of Pain Within. With the band developing rapidly beyond it's own means, it quickly became apparent that a second guitarist needed to be added, and that the band had to once again open itself to the possibility that try-outs were in the near future. That's when the close band relationship with local scene friends Fall On Deaf Years was at it's peak, and guitarist / band leader Craig Woods began to lend his emotionally driven and capable guitar playing skills to the Pain Within crew, and the band again took a highly noticable turn for the better, as the already tight lineup kept it's established pace and even upped the ante by adding a guitarist with a screamo background to the growing list of influences that affected the writing. Wanting to add another visual aspect to the forever intensifying live performance that had earned Pain Within a name, a light set was purchased and rebuilt to withstand the test that was a show consisting of six guys pounding their equipment to exorcise their emotional demons. Greg "nile" Fowler, also of Fall On Deaf Years fame, was the test driver and developer for the new lights, helping the band perfect the addition as a piece of the live show that people would grow to recognize and expect. In late 2000, the taxing schedules of both bands made it impossible for either to continue with the shared lineup. With the departure of Greg and Craig, Pain Within found themselves in unfamiliar territory, with having to replace members, they were in a reconstructing phase. Since auditions were nothing new to the guys in PW, the newly recorded demo, "i can't let you forget", was an added help in the search for new members and the first choice for both positions was contacted. Local rocker Jon Troisi, from South Jersey's Bitter End, showed up for a mutual checking out to see if both parties were on the same page. After only one practice both Jon and the band knew that they had come across the missing piece that was needed to push Pain Within to the next plateau that they were trying so hard to achieve. The light tech. and backing vocal position was filled by a close personal friend to the band, Mike Dahms. Working for a year under the lineup that is most widely known to be Pain Within, the band hit the road every weekend with newly introduced roadie Christian "knuckles" Lippolis in their Econoline 350 bus, known as "Big Blue", and assaulted different cities all up and down the east coast, still alotting time for the writing and recording of the first Pain Within full length, "i.used.to.feel." that was released by Breakeven Records in January of 2002. Even with the first pressing of "feel" selling out rapidly, the rock'n'roll lifestyle wasn't for all the members. Lineup changes that were once so far and few between are now part of the musical experience again. Bassist Jim Weiss is now a police officer for the Philadelphia Police Department, and is working on building a life with his girlfriend Victoria (our web designer and manager) and their son Trevor James. Mike Dahms parted ways to dedicate more time to personal priorities, and the fold was reconfigured even more when Greg Montijo decided to master yet another instrument and move into the bass slot. Going back to one of their top considerations for guitarist, they approached One Dead, Three Wounded's Jay Willmot, also hailing from Bitter End notoriety. Having reunited Jon and Jay, the writing has achieved a level once only dreamt of, and while each major member that touched Pain Within has molded them into what they are today, it is more than apparent that this is the most solid point in the band's three plus year timeline. Through it all, the band never slowed down. Still playing shows, still dedicating much time to working on the second full length, tentatively titled "postcards for a dying boy". Pain Within has grown to a level of professionalism and dedication that can take them to the depths that thay have fantasized about for so long

    Press Reviews
"Mixing the raw emotional chaos of converge with the solid song structures of zao, pain within has made a mark with their debut full length "i.used.to.feel". These nine songs will leave you with something, whether it be suspense for where the story will pick up again, or the inspiration to exact revenge on your own personal demons.... brutal and heavy, beautiful and melodic, this is unlike anything to come out of the philadelphia heavy music scene in quite some time." -- carl teglas (metal to the core zine
