Artist History
Born in the heat of the desert..." Only kidding! Flash and the RetroRockets, originally kings of rockabilly in the south Florida market nowresiding in Las Vegas, formed in October of 1996 as an alternative to theclassic and traditional oldies bands that have plagued the music scenefor the past decade or so, playing and overplaying the same oldies and/or classic rock tunes. The group's founding father, (only in title, not chronology), Gary "Flash"Sax, decided to break tradition and go against the grain by performing amusic that was not yet mainstream. Having been introduced to andhaving developed a love for rockabilly/surf while part of the scene out in LosAngeles, CA, Flash thought that it was time for south Florida to catch up(Wake Up!). To this end, Flash and his Retro Rockets performedeverywhere and anywhere including public events, dives, private parties,etc.. Anywhere just to get the sound out there. It didn't take long for Flash and the Retro Rockets to start building a name for themselves. They did this by sticking to their guns and not getting caught up in the trap of conformity. Integrity and honesty were also part of the formula. Said Flash, "I tell the clubs and agents that we are a rockabilly/surf band. We play rockabilly/surf. That's a fact Jack!..." Jack, and even Jill, usually dig it! Performing covers and paying tribute to the pioneers of rockabilly/surf including Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, The Ventures, Duane Eddy and even Elvis (Flash does amean lip curl!) in their stage show, Flash and the Retro Rockets also have their own hep originals all written by Flash. These originals are all contained on their debut CD, "Birth of the Beat" released here on theJ-Bird Records label. Flash and the Retro Rockets have had the fortunate opportunity to openin concert for the likes of "Air Supply", "Lee Rocker" (original "StrayCats"), "Kim Lenz", "Cigar Store Indians", "Mighty Blue Kings", etc..Flash himself has performed with and/or opened for such luminaries as Mary Wilson, Jr. Walker and the Allstars, Gary US Bonds, The Platters,The Coasters, Lou Christie, Gary Lewis and the Playboys, JohnnyRivers, Marty Stewart, DJ Fontana and Scotty Moore(Elvis' originaldrummer and guitarist) and many more. Flash's recent accolades include the front page of the Jackson Sun in Tennessee for performing at an invitation only concert for thegroundbreaking of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame Museum being built inJackson, as well as being a featured performer at the "Standing on the Corner" concert in Winslow, Arizona in commemoration for the Eagles'song "Take it Easy" which features that line. |

Press Reviews
Lee Cotten, Rock& Blues News Magazine..."Flash and the Retro Rockets have all the right moves. "JohnnyRocker" is a growling tune that's full of twang. "Rockin' Billy" and"One Last Chance" are fascinating as much for their unbridledexhuberance as for the complete lack of pretentious studioovertones. "I Want You Now" is a hopped-up rocker sung atbreakneck speed..." Ink 19 Magazine..."Flash and the Retro Rockets showcase rockabilly that would impress the Stray Cats. " |
