Artist description
B - S I D E ( DJ / Producer ) (Phonomental, Backroom Records UK, Dragon Lounge - San Diego, CA USA)................................... From Europe to the U.S., B-SIDE is known for the love of Breakbeat music. Voted as San Diego's top DJ by the Union Tribune 2000, this breakbeat head has been making ways and gaining worldwide respect in the Breakbeat community for his skills on the turntables as well as his production efforts in the nu skool breaks genre. "San Diego's turntable icon for almost a decade", as touted by RayGun Magazine in their February 99 Dj issue, has been spinning for 12 years now. B-Side (aka Ben Hebel) began his dj'ing career at the age of 19 and was involved in the early stages of the "rave scene" in Southern California. He has traveled to almost 35 cities and 3 countries during his Dj career and has earned the respect from his peers for his strong technical skills and his ability to cut-up the vinyl. He has rocked crowds of 200 all the way up to 40,000 people and has spun along the side of many of the big name dj's and Live Act's of today. For the past 3 years B-Side has run his own club night known as Dragon Lounge, which pushes the Breakbeat and Drum&Bass sounds that he loves. It is regarded, by many, the Premier Breakbeat/D&B club in Southern California. He has personally been responsible for bringing some of the main players in both the Nu Breaks and Drum & Bass scene out to San Diego. In 1998 he was asked to do a mix CD for startup label 'Junior High Recordings' which was a subsidiary of Fragrant Music in Los Angeles. This CD, entitled 'Player-One Press Start', received excellent reviews in several magazines. He has been featured in URB, BPM Culture, and RayGun magazine listed B-Side in their 'International Who's Who of Dj's' list. Year 2000 saw the production skills of B-Side taking effect. His debut 12" out on Evolution Records in September 2000, featured a nu skool break track "The V" and a house track "This Way". This record, created quite a buzz and was rocked by many of the leading breaks Dj's around the world. His mixsets and tracks have also been featured on Raveworld.net, Breaksworld.com, and Nubreaks.com. B-Side is scheduled to have a release out on Phonomental Records (Simply Jeff's Label) July 2001. He has also just finished up a remix for Functional Breaks UK that will be out July 2001 and will have an ep out on Backroom Records UK, tentatively schedule for August/September 2001.

Press Reviews
“Here is a DJ with skills that go beyond using the crossfader” - URB.................. “B-Side does not disappoint” - BPM.................... “B-Side forges a seemless and well-programed mix, making this a disc that deserves to make its way to the top mixed compilations heap.” - ThousandWords ................ “B-Side mixes salvos of funky-breaks tracks that make Fatboy Slim sound grim” - Alternative Press........................... Review of B-Side EP on Evolution Records from WHERE@ Magazine (Distributed in SD, LA, LV) “The time is now for one of the most old school dj’s that I can think of to get his respect at the national level. This ep contains two tracks the most predictable is a pounding nu skool break track that rivals anything that those UK guys think they can come up with. The bass is deep and the snares are just right. Don’t be surprised if you end up picking this one up as a licensed UK track on any of the respected break labels The real surprise comes from the other side of the record. If I did’nt know better I’d swear that this track was produced by dj Dan or Angel Alanis. B-Side delivers and incredible pounding house number that you can be sure will end up on a million mix tapes and a thousand top ten charts If you like either nu skool breaks or house pick this record up as a domestic way before you can only get the tracks on a more expensive import version”. |
