Artist History
“While listening to Bob Marley An inspiration came to meIt is those who have sufferedBut don’t extend the sufferingBut don’t extend the sufferingWho are chosen…”--“Ghetto Superstars,” The World Liberators The history of The World Liberators, L.A.’s craziest trip-hop band, is stranger than fiction. They premiered on cable TV, May 10, 2000, on a TV program called “Gaia-Vision” in Amherst, Massachusetts. They made a cross-country trip to Los Angeles to spread messages of Peace, Love, Global Liberation and an end to Corporate Greed through trip~hop music. The first thing they did was organized two events to spread their message (The DNC Pre-Protest Party and The Survivor’s Party of the DNC Protests). They headlined protest bills at the Whisky-A-Go-Go on August 13th and The Joint on August 18th. And the rest is ‘Welcome to the Movement’ (the name of their soon-to-be-publicly-released album) history… “They just couldn’t seem to get enough,” sighs Liberator keyboardist and lead female vocalist Thursday Knight. No, they couldn’t. The protest vibe was too strong. Nine shows and fifty-two days later… “I guess they need this stuff more than we do,” says Lion, guitar player and lead male vocalist. “I guess people are just ready for revolutionary trip~hop. They’ve had enough electronica, you know what I’m saying?” Flashback: Thursday and Lion met in December 1999 in Greenfield, Massachusetts, through a mutual friend. Lion was on his way to Amsterdam to DJ and spread a message of peace and love. Thursday was a Certified Senior Advisor for MetLife, and an elected official in the town of Greenfield. During the winter of 2000, they recorded in Springfield, Massachusetts. After a series of gigs at Lion’s familiar east-coast venues, from his former band “One Tribe,” they formed The World Liberators. “Millions of people starving around the world,” say Thursday and Lion. “Over 50% of the population of this world has never made a phone-call! Corporations have taken control of the American Government. It doesn’t matter what party you’re affiliated with, it’s the same. Why is it that they don’t listen to us anymore? Our Government’s constant interference in other countries’ affairs really comes down to oil and greed. They are working for the major corporations. This prevents other countries from feeding people and developing sufficient economies. We have enough for us – why not share with our fellow Americans and all human beings in this vast world? We need to put an end to violence, from police brutality to domestic violence in our homes and schools. It’s time that we take care of the earth ~ after all, it’s ours! ~ and protect the environment, and the wildlife. Because it won’t matter where you live in the future, if the world continues to be destroyed! We’re also for the legalization of marijuana/hemp, and the use of ethanol instead of oil-based gasolines.” “It’s not too late to do something about this. All people worldwide can help each other. We need to show more love, understanding, and compassion to our fellow human beings. It doesn’t matter what color, race or creed you are, where you live or where you came from, we are all inner-connected. This message is something that is definitely missing today in pop art. If we all work together we can really make this a better world for everyone, and save future generations from heartache and despair!” End of Flashback. On August 28th, The World Liberators played at Len Fagan’s legendary Coconut Teaszer on Sunset Strip, the same club that has featured career-breakouts by Green Day, Nirvana, the Wallflowers, and Rage Against the Machine. L.A. gigs at The Universal Bar and Grill (Sept. 2), Lush (Sept. 8), Scruffy O’Shea’s (Sept. 14), The Blue Saloon (Sept. 15), Luna Park (Sept. 21), The Martini Lounge (Sept. 25), 14 Below (Sept. 26), Coconut Teaszer again (Oct. 8), Temple Bar (Oct. 9), The Cat Club (Oct.18), and The Festival of Life on October 23rd again at the Coconut Teaszer for two sets. “I’m not kidding you, because our friends back home still don’t believe us -- we got offered to play Madison Square Garden this December. I’m not kidding you!!!! A woman from the New York Film Festival called and offered us to play Madison Square Garden!!!! How did they hear about us ~ you know what I mean? We just got a WEBSITE (still under construction)!” Maybe that had something to do with the L.A. Police attempting to close down The World Liberators’ first two L.A. gigs? “I’d heard the LAPD was pretty crazy back east – everybody says that, you know what I mean?” says Lion. “But when we found out all the stuff that goes on behind-the-scenes around here, you really have to shake your head to think they’d even WANT to bother a touring band so much…” Yes, the LAPD tried (unsuccessfully) to close down BOTH The World Liberators first two L.A. gigs! By harassing Whisky Booker Leah DeBonneventura into almost believing that Al Gore HIMSELF would be on the Sunset Strip on August 13th, hence the possibility of a riot…AND by sending the Fire Marshall to close down the Joint on the night of that second protest show (August 18th), which did go on as planned despite the LAPD’s attempted closure, a show which included victims of LAPD rubber bullet attacks (from the Rage Against the Machine/Ozomatli show on August 14th) speaking of their experience IN THAT VERY PUBLIC FORUM! “This experience has showed us that a lot of people feel the same way that we do because they still came out to the shows,” says Thursday. “They keep coming because it’s starting to feel like a family, and we keep reaching new people. That’s what revolutionary trip~hop is all about. It makes my heart feel good and in this crazy world it makes me feel grounded and motivates me to keep spreading this message to everyone who hasn’t heard it yet! This thing is getting bigger…” Stranger than fiction indeed. |
