    Artist History
Rising from the blood stained sands of violence-driven Colombia, XIII Candles is born, after three brothers (Camilo, Diego and Daniel) and Diego and German Beltran, decided to play as a group. Having met while serving the Army, the first concert they did was precisely there, in an old office which used to be a dungeon; although by the time there were no original compositions by these gifted musicians, this first step was what would lead them to follow the majestic path of darkness which they now stride over... The group lasted with this original lineup for a year and a half. Because of internal problems between Diego B. (vocals), Diego R. (bass) and the rest of the band, they both left. Their first release, "Terrore Tenebrae: Pared de Tiempo" (Terrore Tenebrae: A Wall of Time), was hence recorded only by the three remaining members, namely Camilo, German and Daniel. German and Camilo, both students of Javier Quijano (lead gutarrist of La Corte and Teatro Panico), carried on his legacy of dark, extremely heavy, although never musically mediocre, guitar work and composition. Influenced by guitarrists from the likes of Chuck Schuldiner and Andy LaRocque, to the musically intrincate power of Bathory, Emperor and Immortal, passing through the characteristic bigotry of Black Metal, XIII Candles merges the beautiful and the horrid, the peaceful and the violent, the holy and the impious, into a simphony of malevolent anger towards a world consumed in its own filth. Songs like "This Evil Habit of Thought..." express a neurotic belief of solitude. Daniel's empirical knowledge floods his being, and it is this raw power which gives this group's percussion the intense brutality which caracterizes it. As of september 4th, 1998, XIII Candles now brings to its lines the power of Alvaro Medina's throat, who ruptures in anguish and evident torment, to sing for these dark souls. Having studied vocal techniques with Cesar Dorado, a chilean vocalist, he had previously joined two bands: Valhalla, in 1994 for 2 years, and Clerus Obdurat. Keyboardist Alberto Vásquez and ex-bassist Diego Rodríguez, join the band, thus bringing, for the first time, a complete lineup.
