Artist History
The core members of Driving West came together in the early 90’s in the mainstream band Sahara Rain. After the members became Christians, received several major label offers, and released an independent album the group disbanded. After the breakup, Andrew Mark and Richard Mathews continued to write songs and slowly began building their own recording studio. James Mathews left on a four year missions trip with Mercy Ships where he was leader of music ministries and assisted the main ministry with surgical and dental care for impoverished people around the world. Billy Fraser went on to perform with the band Oblation and recorded the project Discern that was produced and engineered by Andrew. During this time apart Andrew and Richard went through a time of real soul searching and began writing about things they knew and about experiences in their lives instead of writing to please managers, lawyers, and industry people. It was now 1999, James had returned from his mission work and Billy had begun working with Andrew and Richard. With a vast repertoire of songs and a completed line up, Driving West was formed. The band entered the studio late in 1999 to finish tracking material and began working with Ty Tabor as co producer on the project. Press Reviews
CROSS RHYTHMS MAGAZINE(UK) Three piece American alternative rock outfit Driving West deliver a prettyheavyweight debut CD co-produced by Ty Tabor. An album of extremes whichtakes in the crunching riffs of "Power And Hope" and the ferociousheaviosity of "Anger" and "Throwing It All Away" proving in Americanparlance that Driving West ermmm…RAWK! At the same time they're alsocapable of great melodic acoustic driven poppier rock on "Color Blind"(which sounds like the sort of thing the Monkees would have recorded ifthey'd been formed in the 21st century!) and the single release "Touch YourSoul". Just as the band continue to outwit the listener with so manymusical twists and turns, the same goes for the band's lyrical output.Honest dips into the emotions make for enigmatic and soulful reflections. This is not propagandist pap or Bible thumping but neither is it blandspiritual statements. Instead Driving West serve up a healthy diet of songsthat will feed the soul searchers that rock music normally leaves stranded!(9 squares)Mike RimmerMike Rimmer/ EditorHost UBC Radio Satellite Radio/UK |
