Artist description
Dean Neufeld started playing piano as soon as my parents bought one for me in 1960 (a 'toy' with lots of keys, including black keys, and about 3 octaves - wish I had it now!), when I was 4. My dad taught me a couple of songs, and I made up many of my own...I was raised in the Mennonite Bretheren faith. For this I owe most of my musical knowledge, reading and learning music right out of the hymnal. My dad was in the choir, and I played the organ on Sunday nights, after a few lessons. My secular source of musical information came mostly from my Aunt Janet, who is like a sister to me, many hours of swinging and dizziness on the merry-go-round at River Glen Park in Willow Glen, California. Janet introduced me to the Beatles, the Who, Jefferson Airplane, KSJO: (In 1970, an 'underground' music station.) I was jazz-educated by my piano teacher J. Paul Dorsa, in 1973. This was quite a turning point in my musical life. He introduced me to the music of Chick Corea, and Santana. Jamming with friends on weekends with my Fender Rhodes, to the songs written by the top fusion.jazz.rock players at the time (Mahavishnu, RTF, Yes, Genesis, Steely Dan) was my way of having fun. One guy would say, 'Do you know 'Meeting of the Spirits'? or 'King of the World', 'RoundAbout', or 'Back in New York City', and we all would do it somehow, and make it work.In 1983 I was introduced to the artist Harry Colman. This man taught me how to play the piano, after I was so sure I already knew how. After years of working to make a living in the computer industry, and my music in the closet, if God is willing, now I am ready to play. |
