Artist History
Four friends from Detroit with the vision to encourage, inspire and make good art
started Au Revoir Borealis in 1998. The aim of Au Revoir Borealis is to write songs
that share and encourage while being big, epic, and intensely emotional. It’s kind
of like listening to a mini-soundtrack.
Steve Swartz met Mike Carian and Justin VanSlembrouck in 1995 and early 1996 as
a college student. It wasn’t long before they discovered that they shared a somewhat
similar vision and began writing and playing together.
They continued to play together as they moved into 1998. After much thought about
a name, Au Revoir Borealis was decided upon, which is basically rough French for
“farewell to northern lights”.
Enter August 1998: After playing instrumentally as a three piece, they brought in Stephenie Halpert to do vocals and take things to the next level.
All of the members are from the Detroit area and have been playing throughout the Great Lakes region for over 3 years. The band is also garnering more attention and a growing fanbase. Numerous e-mails and praise from listeners prompted them to enter the studio during the summer of 1999 where they recorded an EP titled Tienken that was released
in October of 2000. They also contributed a track for a tribute album to Nick Drake that was released on Elsie and Jack Records (www.elsieandjack.com) in October 2000, featuring Au Revoir Borealis, Archer Prewitt, The Autumns with Simon Raymonde (Cocteau Twins), Jessica Bailiff, and Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive) to name just a few.
Currently, the band is unsigned, but working to resolve that issue as they are getting more exposure via radio airplay and press throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and South America. Several labels have expressed interest in the band, but names will be withheld until signing comes to fruition. Presently, the band is busy recording the follow up to their Tienken EP and negotiating pending movie deals with Warner Brothers and Sony Pictures.
Outside of this world of sound, Justin, Mike, and Steve are artists/designers and
Steph is a writer.
Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a great battle. - Philo of Alexandria

Press Reviews
"The images construed from a name like Au Revoir Borealis stretch their fingers out across a crumpled-open map, and so do the images formed within the expansively gorgeous music the humans behind the pseudo French moniker create. And because of this, the name fits. From the opening hum of 'Heavens Downward', the lights go out, your cushioned seat reclines and fast-forward constellations swarm and swoop across your eyes. Your neck aches, but you don't notice until the moon-lit, dirt-road car trip home. And by the third track, 'Waldorf Theft Song,' you're on your way to a fuzzy-blanket, naked-eyelash dreamland. Each component comes together to ride along a nod-your-head synth wave. The result is stunning."- Melissa Giannini, Metro Times (Detroit, MI)Au Revoir Borealis is a wonder on the local scene. Their music floats and lulls in a half-sleep state somewhere between the grand traditions of England's shoegazer bands (e.g., Lush, Ride) and Americana pop (e.g., Big Star). Sure, it's all been done before, but so has everything else out there, and A.R.B. does its job well. The lyrics are basically unintelligible, but they function with the music to create, as the band rightly states, a 'mini-soundtrack.' The music is still far more beautiful than anything associated with Michigan rock thus far and, given the opportunity, could show the (indie) nation that we've got more than one dimension here.Reason to Buy: It's dawn and you want to fall asleep in a field of dew and poppies.- Natalie Haddad, Real Detroit Weekly (Detroit, MI) |
