Artist description
Water and Stone - A stone smashes water explosively. But also, water flows passively around a stone and over time, shapes the stone to its liking. This Taoist idea represents the highly creative musicians who’ve come together with me in Sonic Liberation Front. They are dynamic artists whose impact is strong. Their creative drive will flow around any barrier and transform. They are to me, the most inspiring musicians in the world. I give them my heart-felt thanks for this collaboration. Water and Stone, our first release as Sonic Liberation Front, at its core represents the coming together of two musical forms that are close to my heart: contemporary improvisational jazz and the sacred Afro-Caribbean folklorico music. On the “jazz” side with Terry Lawson, Adam Jenkins, Kimbal Brown, and Howard Cooper you have incredibly innovative and highly personal styles that are informed by everything from the “birth of the cool,” to the Monk-Dolphy tight-rope walk, to post-Albert Ayler free expression. In parallel with the gifted folkloric musicians, Nick Rivera, Chuckie Joseph, Joey Toledo, and Frank “Squirrel” Williams, you hear an authentic yet contemporary urban expression of an ancient music. Relative to other folklorico groups, the way they play, it very much has a funk lean. There are also flavors from the world of ambient chill and trip-hop. We use them as textures in varying degrees from performance to performance, and will from CD release to CD release. Sonic Liberation Front rejects the idea of categorization in music and art. We’re about free creative expression for the sole purpose of free creative expression. Enjoy. Kevin Diehl - Sonic Liberation Front - August 19, 2000 |
