"Joe, Joe, and our own Beltana comprise the trio known as SONA, a name derived from the story of the Buddha's sudden enlightenment after years of contemplation under a tree. This band features an eclectic and rich mix of styles and sounds, which make for a universal appeal to many musical tastes. I feel that they have an appeal even outside of the Pagan context. The older Joe, who is responsible for many of the more "bluegrass" style songs the bands offers such as Fairy Dew, Burn in Hell, and others, provides a lighthearted and merry feel to much of the music -- and lyrics you can sing along to and remember. Like Trickster, (from Loke E. Coyote) he also has a flair for satire. I found myself being very careful about what I said and did around these folks, let me tell you..... The younger Joe's particular musical style, embodied in songs like Paper Floor is thus far eluding a particular characterization for me, though I would take a stab at saying what I have heard sounds like "folk rock" or "alternative". Whatever it is, it is introspective, passionate, and even brooding at times, though it never for a moment loses the feel of being driven by an intense, energetic PRESENCE. It is...quite good. Bel, whose song contributions thus far are Land of the Sidhe, The Well, Tate'sDream, and Snails Ho, provides a melodic feminine counterbalance to the smooth masculine voices of the Joes. Her songs feel like "psychedelic folk" to me, haunting and eerie in their dark, soulful power and beauty. The song Snails Ho is a humorous and cheery tribute to her experience with her "family" at the Pagan Spirit Gathering every year. In even more words, you MUST experience them for yourself." -SilverDrake Fey (of the Texas recording sessions)***** "The second band of the night was Sona. This group is the "Peter, Paul and Mary" of Pagandom. The group consists of a father (on the guitar) and a son (playing a mandolin) who are both named Joe, and a sensuous smiling gal on the congos named Beltana (Bel for short). Their humorous lyrics had me LAUGHING MY ASS OFF! They started out with the "Pagan Polka". Sona then sang the hilarious "It's Burning Time in Texas, let those witches be bright... anybody got a match?" Other songs included the parody "Burn in Hell", the thoughtful "Labyrinth" song, and the soothing "Blessed be". Sona is definitely a group that you must experience." -Cern, (on SpringFire II in Indy)***** "Sona, a trio of pagan musicians, played a delightful blend of bluegrass to rock-a-billy, which included a song called the 'Pagan Polka'. The Fireworks now began, which set the last Nite of festivities off to a time of drumming and dancing into the wee hours." -Don Waterhawk (on CMA Beltane 2001)***** "Friday night kicked off with a great performance by 'Sona'. Many thanks to Beltana, Joe Sr., Joe Jr., for their energy and for the smiles that they provided that night. Its always a joy to hear you play." -Don Waterhawk (on Heartland 16) *****
