Artist History
NOVEMBER 1995 - While living with her family in Seoul, South Korea, Mya Wilkins then 16 years old, writes her first song, and entitles it “YOU.” She continues writing songs there until September of 1997, when she moves to Fayetteville, North Carolina. SUMMER 1998 - Tiring of the cover scene that had developed in Fayetteville, guitarist Kevin Horne and bassist Stacy Jones decide to form an all original rock and funk band. They begin composing, as well as searching for a singer and drummer. SEPTEMBER 1998 - At a local open blues jam in Fayetteville, Mya hears Kevin and Stacy’s playing, and convinces them to listen to some of her material. The three exchange ideas and vision and decide to unite. EARLY 1999 - The trio continued to write new songs, and at this point also realized that they must find a drummer with not only technical skills, but with similar vision, as well. After trying several local players, Kevin and Stacy hear about Cornell Young, who would be playing the same blues jam where they had met Mya. Highly impressed, they convinced him to listen to some of their songs, and he quickly agreed to join them and complete the band . . . Thus, SLAPPIN’ PATTIES was born. AUGUST 1999 - Slappin’ Patties bests a half dozen other local groups at the B107 Battle of the Bands. At this point the group begins to gain more recognition and develops a growing local following. YEAR 2000 - SLAPPIN’ PATTIES has played regularly in the Fayetteville area since capturing the Battle of the Bands. The have played at several regional benefit shows, as well as Southern Pines and the Triangle. Their energetic original sounds, in combination with Mya’s powerful vocals, have made them popular with both the college alternative scene and with classic rock and rollers, both male and female. They have developed a 20+ title, all-original set list that encompasses a large variety of sounds and rhythms. |
