Artist History
Serge Stavila was born in Moldova in 1964. Immersed in classical music from a young age, Stavila had a natural talent and at the age of 15, Stavila was invited to attend the National Music College and the National Conservatory of Moldova. Stavila then travelled the breath of Eastern Europe as a session musician. Along the way, he explored influences of his own Moldavian and Bulgarian heritage (Stavila’s mother is Bulgarian) and was exposed to new styles from all over Eastern Europe. He came to Ireland in 1993 and lived in Clare for a year, playing jazz and soaking up the rich heritage of Irish traditional music. He moved to Dublin and now composes and performs a mixture of jazz, Latin, and traditional music. |

Press Reviews
This debut recording from Serge Stavila is proof positive of just how accomplished this Moldavian saxophonist is, both as player and composer. It’s refreshing to hear the evocative sound of the Balkans applied to these contemporary grooves. In producer Derek Cronin, he's found the perfect foil for his broad canvas of musical reference points. Between them, they've created an intriguing mix of transnational, music sans frontiers, with a stellar cast of young players from the Dublin jazz scene and beyond. A multi-cultural, multi-faceted document of the ever evolving face of music in Ireland. Gerry Godley Improvised Music Co. , Ireland |
