    Artist History
This album was instigated by a request from Anne Rice's Organization in New Orleans for a song for the then upcoming movie "Interview with a Vampire". The song "Vampyre" was later re-recorded acoustically for Jay Aston's "Unpopular Songs" & more recently on Gene Loves Jezebel's "7" both versions were retitled "Who Wants To Go To Heaven". The version on the "Jezebel" CD is the best! Three other songs were recorded for this session in Los Angeles; "B 4 The Slaughter", "I Hate You" & the original version of "The Goodbye Girl" (Jay's bitter commentary on the Fashion industry.) Francois Perez the French guitarist is featured on that session, accompanying Jay & keyboardist wizard James Faeri {sic} on his travels. These travels included stints in NYC, London, Portugal & Georgia where, along with producer/bassist/percussionist Steve Cheeks, He recorded "U fill me with Holes" & "The Damned." Francois & James F. both dropped out while Jay recorded "Unpopular Songs"in London."Heroine" was recorded at this time. Although always intended for the "Jezebel" CD it somehow ended up on versions of Gene Loves Jezebel's "7" as did "Pretty Girl" which was recorded with GLJ as an afterthought for the "7" album. "Black Box" & "White Car In Germany" were the final songs recorded, and were done in an ancient house called "Thornfield" in Norfolk England.

JayAston/Jezebel.ccIt's not often that an artist can successfully expand and redefine theboundaries of a genre that he helped pioneer. Then again, there is no other artist quite like Jay Aston. From their earliest underground hit "Upstairs" totheir seminal Darkwave breakthroughs ("Desire," "Stephen"), and through thehaunting beauty of their later masterpieces ("Kiss of Life," "HeavenlyBodies"), Jay Aston and Gene Loves Jezebel have created a distinct body ofwork marked by an engaging melodiousness and a vital, vibrant spirit that setthem apart from the black clad masses. While Aston's muse has cast its delightful spell across an exotic variety of genres -- from post-punk rock to dance music, from pop to folk -- his deepest connectionshave always remained with the dark Welsh melancholia that has always imbuedhis work with a soul-stirring power. The new CD, "Jezebel," features all of the elements that have made Jay Aston alegendary, beloved figure in modern rock circles: lyrics that explore the darkest regions of the soul, matched to melodies that lead listeners to the light, topped off with Aston's unique take on life in the Gothic City {Manhattan} & wonderfully expressive voice ."Jezebel" is Jay's most personal statement to date.At times harrowing, but not without humour, juxtaposing songs like ?U fill me with holes? & ?I Hate You? serve to make the individual statements even more poignant. If?Vampyre? sounds like a Gothic epic created for a Hollywood movie, it?s because it is.Anne Rice?s organization uses Jay?s ?Kiss of Life? to close the annual Vampire Le Stat convention in New Orleans & asked him to write a new closing song.?When everything clicks, as it does on the majestic "Vampyre,"the confident, soaring guitar conjures all that Aston might accomplish with the resources of a state-of-the-art studio and sympathetic producer at his disposal. Here's hoping that this solo disc can help him get there.?JOHN KAPPES ?The Goodbye Girl?{"The Goodbye Girl" has a chorus most power-pop bands would kill for.? KAPPES} is another example of this technique, except the fashion industry is Aston?s target here.Aston has said the song is autobiographical, though we all become ?Goodbye Girl
