Artist History
General Purpose is dedicated to bettering themselves as musicians by succeeding in life through the music industry doing what they love - playing their style of music - to influence and connect with the people. The LA-based band started out in a town called Glendora and have learned that being from a less-than-well-know town isn't so bad when you have a unique sound and a few people following your dream. General Purpose is a pretty self-explanatory band name. When the group sat down to try and figure out what their purpose was, it was to play music. And thus, General Purpose was formed. Lead singer Justin Barba explains, "Our goal is to influence and connect with people through our music." And that's what has helped General Purpose build their fan base and increase their visibility outside of their hometown.Artist History
In a town not far from LA, but not nearly as well-known, three young guys decided to form a band in their hometown, Glendora. Being a teenager from Glendora left little to be desired, unless you were a member of a music group that plays familiar sounds, with their own flare, and attracts a bunch of local kids. That's what happened for Justin, Chris and Andrew nearly six years ago when they decided to make some music that would change the face of music and social thinking.
With little direction other than some musically talented buddies hanging out, Chris purchased a bass, Justin tried to master the "Power Chord" and Sean tried to figure out how to set up his drums. Then there was Ryan, Sean's brother. He worked hard to develop some lyrics for the group to practice with, while also taking the lead as the groups' main vocalist. Together, the four young guys called themselves General Purpose and began to play a few backyard parties. Just six months after forming, the group decided to reorganize. With different interests in mind, Ryan chose to leave the group. Justin took this opportunity to test his vocal cords and once the "new" General Purpose got revamped itself, things started to take off for the group.
General Purpose began to perform cover songs of NOFX, Pennywise, Ten Foot Pole and White Kaps. They even took a stab at writing some of their very own lyrics, which they felt, better expressed their image of a punk rock band. Eventually, conquering the backyard party scene, General Purpose had a fan base to help General Purpose become a common name among local bands. Still in high school, the group decided to take their talent to competition entering the Glendora High Battle of the Bands. It's not a surprise that this up-and-coming group of down-home punk rockers took home 1st place. With some confirmed confidence on their side, the boys headed to a studio to start recording some of their music. Three trips later, they recorded a 15-song CD, which they would use to introduce themselves to the popular LA venues. It wasn't immediate that General Purpose got opportunities to play at clubs including The Roxy, Chain Reaction, The Showcase, The Shack and The Cobalt Café, but achieving stage time at these venues has gotten them to where they are today.
Now high school graduates and hardworking musicians - Chris, 22; Justin, 20 and Sean, 19 - have learned what it takes to become successful and earn respect of musicians in the competitive music industry. Sticking together as a group and working together toward the same goal has earned General Purpose a solid fan base and positive music reviews on Mp3.com and in Live Magazine.
Like a looming thundercloud, hovering above, creating and building energy and electricity, and ready to unleash their force of melodic punk, General Purpose awaits an opportunity to show of their talents to the right person who will give them their "big break."
