Artist description
Voight-Kampff, the band, is an embodiment of our belief in play. We are dedicated to the exploration of music and sound textures through carefully focused, spontaneous improvisation, and feel it is important to actively participate in the free improv and experimental music scene. While our music has been described as a soundtrack to an unwritten movie, we mix elements of rock, jazz, ambient, and as yet unexplored styles that emerge amidst the creative process. Through a mix of conventional and extended playing techniques, a collage of dynamic, well-phrased ideas comes together to trigger images in the listener?s mind. |

Artist History
Voight-Kampff was started as a Nashville-based band in 1993 by students of Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. They have played in and around Nashville as well as Atlanta. In 1999, the members of Voight-Kampff decided to start an organization dedicated to bringing creative and improvised music to the Nashville area. Andy Mays as since left Voight-Kampff on good terms to pursue his own musical interest. His band, Soulos, can be found on MP3.com. Check out our links. |

Press Reviews
Nashville Scene (2/24/00) - An Evening of Free Improvisational Music: Nashville's Voight-Kampff Quartet is the center of a group of local artists trying to establish a foothold for spontaneous improvised music and free jazz. Playing a variety of odd, Ha rry Partch-like instruments -- including a long plank strung with wire that produces a sound like whale songs -- Voight-Kampff makes ambient, hypnotic music that fills and defines its space, like liquid. The group joins Andy Mays' electronic project Soulos (soul operating system) and performance poet Landry Butler's Seventh Sister at the ruby green Contemporary Arts Center on Fifth Ave. S. - Jim Ridley, journalist.G |
