Press Reviews
The Boston Phoenix, Cellars By Starlight
October 16, 1997 by Brett Milano: "They [Catapult Records] have five CDs and seven singles in the
catalogue, and this week Catapult drops its largest-ever release... ...the pick of this batch is
Ultrabreakfast's album, a rough-pop charmer with dizzy energy, local in-jokes ("I want a time machine
and a lump of coal/I want Billy Ruane to save my soul"), surf guitar, love songs to hairdryers, a couple of
indelible hooks, male/female vocals, and an overall friendliness that brings Let's Active to mind."
Cheeseball Magazine, Fall 1997: "The full length is finally here and what a nice debut. The songs
from the earlier release are here including Cacophone which lit up the local radio waves earlier this year.
The disc includes a trilogy of songs which combine the band's strong combination of airy vocals and a
jangley wall of sound that buzzes around the vocals without swallowing it. Cooler Than California starts
the three off, a piece of power pop candy. It then hushes to a whisper with the mulling Window Made of
Glass and then twists itself into Silver Surfer, a musical return to glory. Mary comes off as a traditional
pop single; simple and straight forward. Kristen, the drummer gets her shot at the vocal chores as well.
In fact they all share this sincere quality. This is one of the few bands that are finding a sound all their
own." |
