    Press Reviews
Love Candy reviewed in Amplifier Issue # 22 Jan. 2001 A big sound from this Indiana quartet, whose self-titled album sounds amazingly pro -- a touch of trademark Oasis bombast (in the big guitars and vocal presence) and the kind of songcraft that recalls pop top 40 radio in its 1970's heyday. Every song here has a terrific hook you'll find yourself singing in the shower, on the train to work, or in more embarrassingly public forums. "I Can't Let You Go," with its swaggering drum beat and testifyin' vocals, "Anything for Love," "Mr. Rain," "Truck Honey" and "Nothing Matters" are instantly catchy, with clever lead guitar work, piquant harmonies and great choruses. "Dirty Circus" and "Love is Waiting" rock heavily and are also pretty funny -- a great attribute in any band. And while balladry here is overwhelmed by the more immediately upbeat numbers, "Insignificant" and "So Far Away," propelled by acoustic strumming and more laid-back grooves, embrace an adroitly Anglo-pop influence that easily avoids mere sentimentality. While lyrics are journeyman-like at best, Love Candy succeeds at capturing, as well as fostering, a classic rock 'n' roll ideal in their musical identity. Covering the Boyce and Hart nugget, "She," points out where these cats are coming from: playing great pop music well and with plenty of heart Larry O. Dean/Amplifier # 22 Jan. 2001 20-Apr-99 09:52:01Rave On.....Random Musings by a (Pop) NutThe following review appeared in Amplifier Magazine Volume #4,No.#2 1999.It's always a pleasent surprise when a pop record flies in your face fromoutta nowhere and knocks you on your patoot; such is the case with LoveCandy's " Sacrilicious ". This generous 15-song effort springs forth fromthe pop hotbed of Indianapolis,Indiana (yeah,surrrrrrre...), and contains atleast 10 jingly-jangly tunes that you'll keep coming back to. Me? My triggeris particularly tripped by the disc-ending "Dirty Little Secret", despiteit's lyrical allusions to the worlds oldest profession. Besides, any bandthat opens their record with a sound-bite from the immortal Barney Fife isbeyond reproach. This four piece band fromIndianapolis,Indiana have managed to distill influences such as TheBeatles,Badfinger,The Grapes of Wrath, and Swedish bands like Stonecake andmake the end result sound all their own. Three of the guys, guitarist JamesGalloway, bassist Kelly Mix and drummer Steve Bunny sing lead and write thesongs, which add to the bands versatility. There's plenty to choose from onthis 15 song platter(can you still say platter in the CD age?): The albumopens with the swirling, Revolver-esque McBeavee,a tune devoted to acharacter from "The Andy Griffith Show" and takes off from there, the bandshowing that they're just as comfortable with the harder melodic slants ofDirty Circus, and the heavy Love Is Waiting, as they are with the waltzyLeft For Dead, the lightweight Heartland-ish Where We Wanna Go, and thedelightfully tossed off, Beatle-esque Sunday Morning. Nothing Matters willbring tears to your eyes with it's sad melody lines and weepy guitarfigures, and the albums closing cut, Dirty Little Secret, will give TheSpongetones a run for their money in the faux Mersey brigade. Love Candy isa band that shows a lot of promise and already has the kind of chops whichshould garner major label attention. Sacrilicious is an excellent discthrough and through! The following is thesite ad and review of it. Go to CD Baby by clicking here athttp://www.cdbaby.com Love Candy's debut disc, "Sacrilicious," is brimmingwith guitar-driven, radio-friendly pop tunes. Toss in some clean leadvocals, lush harmonies and excellent production and you have a disc thatdeserves serious attention. Beatles fans of the "Revolver" and "Rubber Soul"period will especially love the strong influence here. Love Candy hassomehow used the Lennon/McCartney toolbox to bring that tradition intosomething new and REALLY good! WAY better than 99% of the bands out therewho say they're Beatlle-influenced. Featuring the strong signature styles ofthree very capable songwriters, Love Candy offers the variety andgenre-hopping normally associated with acts such as Sloan. While thelistener will definitely have a "favourite", they should nevertheless findmuch to enjoy throughout Sacrilicious by Love Candy. "I havebeen a fan of midwestern pop music since I was a teen in the Minneapolisarea and the Soma Record label attracted artists from across the uppermidwest. Times have changed, and indie labels like Mettina Music Inc. arepopping up everywhere * to give a home to very worthy midwestern bands, likeIndianapolis' Love Candy. It's unlikely that they will stay an Indianapolissecret for very long! Their debut disc, "Sacrilicious," is brimming withguitar-driven, radio-friendly pop tunes. Toss in some clean lead vocals, lush harmonies and excellent production and you have a disc that deservesserious attention. Folks who seek out Beatlesque pop will find plenty of FabFour-influenced material among the 15 songs on this disc. "Insignificant"even sounds a bit Lennonesque, with an acoustic arrangement. "Left For Dead"also favors acoustic guitars, and is slightly reminiscent of the Trash CanSinatras. Most of the other cuts have more punch - ala Material Issue, theSpinning Jennies, the Mop Tops and Poverty Stinks. "Mr. Rain" has the rightblend of jangle and harmony vocals to merit airplay. Band members JamesGalloway, Kelly Mix, Phillip and Stephen Bunny know how to compose anoriginal power pop tune that hooks the listener on each melody. "DirtyLittle Secret" finishes this collection of well-crafted tunes with whatcould be an outtake from an early Spongetones disc. Looking for a crossbetween the Beatles and Teenage Fanclub? Look no further than Indianapolis'Love Candy!" Out of the blue arrives this disc...and it's jawdropping phenomenal! So totally PURE POP all the way thru, what you get isnot only the requisite lush, layered harmonies, chimy guitars lifting themelodies out front and really fine production, you get it done better thanmost out there. They pull off the spirited combo of Beatley retro leaningsala The Rooks, then spin into grinding pop, glam 'n roll like Candy, EnuffZnuff and clever, sensible arrangements that play "guess the influence" likethe few Sloan albums. If you find yourself not quite digging one of the 15songs, wait! The next one will hit you. Another reason to believe in thisRenassaince Of Indie Power Pop. Extremely Highly Recommended. "How 'bout Mr. McBeavee?" With theseimmortal words, Mayberry's top (and only) deputy gets Love Candy's debut CD,Sacrilicious, off and running. "Mr. McBeavee" pops and rocks in a whollywonderful way, but there are myriad of other treasures to be found on thistop-flight disc. "Nothing Matters" mixes George Harrison-esque slide guitarand decidedly-Beatlesque harmonies for a most delightful experience (checkout "Where We Wanna Go" for another dead-on Harrison guitar turn). "TruckHoney" bops along with great vocals and a driving beat. "Dirty LittleSecret" recalls the best of The Spongetones with its handclaps andMerseybeat harmonies. The individuals that make up LOVE CANDY noticed theneed in today's music for a fresh sound, an alternative to the so-calledalternatives" Wow. That was such an eloquent way of saying what I've beentrying to put into words for years now. What we really need around here isan "alternative to all of the alternatives". Sacrilicious was a scrumptiouscompilation of songs that were both ambitious as well as virtuous, withoutbeing too repetitious or vexatious. Okay, I guess that's enough of the"ious" talk. What I was trying to say was that LOVE CANDY was delicious. Itmay be more of my crazy talk, but Sacrilicious had a feel of 60's stylemusic that was thoroughly updated with their own unique andpeculiarly-pleasant style for those of you who don't like 60's music. Thegreatest success on the album was perhaps "Love Is Waiting". This song was alittle more "current" if you will. It almost had a heavy-metal edge to itand was accompanied by much more demanding vocals. "Oh don't you see thatfrom where I stand the world is not perfect place…and oh don't you see thatlove is waiting here for you." Then, I'm sorry to say, there comes the song"Dirty Little Secret". Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad song at all, butit was just TOO much like the song, "That Thing You Do" in the movie, "ThatThing You Do". It was just a horribly bad movie so I guess it just left abad taste in my mouth-sorry guys. That thing you do with "Dirty LittleSecret" just brought back too many memories of the movie that I sleptthrough. But despite that one personal, unimportant, really ratherirrelevant moment, LOVE CANDY and Sacrilicious was an earfull of greattasting stuff. It's good to hear a cure for the Alternativism virus that hasmade us all sick around here. Love Candy Sacrilicious - (Mettina Music)Featuring the strong signature styles of three very capable songwriters,Love Candy offers the variety and genre-hopping normally associated withacts such as Sloan. While the listener will definitely have a "favourite",they should nevertheless find much to enjoy throughout Sacrilicious. The CDcomically begins with a soundbite from The Andy Griffith Show used tointroduce the pop/rock of McBeavee, which features a great Beatle-likechorus. Written by drummer Stephen Bunny, the vocal arrangement is solidhere. A sound reminiscent of The Beatles reappears on Insignificant's vocalarrangement but the song's melody is also strong and evocative. While notexactly what the band does best, they nevertheless have some appeal on theirharder rock side, which normally comes from guitarist/keyboardist Kelly J.Mix. The frantic rhythm of Truck Honey perfectly complements the song'stough hook. Whenever Jennifer couples more hard-to-ignore hooks with anothersolid vocal arrangement to great overall effect. Where things meander a bitis on Dirty Circus, a hard-driving rock song that doesn't stand out likesome of the other tracks. Guitarist/keyboardist James Galloway offers upmost of the delicate and evocative numbers on Sacrilicious. The breezymelodies on Mr. Rain and Everything Blue are cases in point. Another is thevery impressive Sunday Morning, benefiting from some lovely piano and asimple sustain-heavy solo. Love Candy, as a whole, is greater than the sumof their parts to be sure. We have plenty of fine musicianship at work herethat are pushed further by some great arranging skills. I would dare to saythat there would be diminishment had each songwriter not had the talents ofthe others in achieving each song's vision. It all comes together so well ontracks such as Where We Wanna Go and the pure pop clapalong Dirty LittleSecret. There's really something for most everyone on Sacrilicious, butdon't be surprised to have a new "favourite" every few days or so. There's alot to take in here - and that's not exactly a painful endeavor with musicas good as this.
