Artist description
"Whatever you call it, ROCK is definitely the main ingredient," says Greensboro's ESP Magazine. We couldn't agree more. Rising out of Raleigh, NC come the impassioned rock sound of Drifting Through.Definitely all rock, Drifting Through's sound is also part jazz, part pop, and a little 70's funk, artfully framed by singer/guitarist Randall Kirsch's take-no-prisoners vocals and meaningful lyricism. DT's songs range from the soulful to the spectacular, fueled by tastefully-sizzling guitar solos, lush and funky keyboard fills, and all exquisitely held together by a dynamic rhythm section. |

Artist History
There are two sets of background here, each as important as the other. (The WFU Connection, as told by Randall and Jay) Randall and Ev played together as college freshmen, then met Jay Doyle, who was reportedly an excellent guitar player, despite the fact that he had not picked up a guitar in a year and a half. It all started our sophomore year at Wake Forest University. Upon graduating, the band moved to Raleigh and after about a year of playing a few shows a month, our then drummer, also a WFU grad, made plans to go to law school. Drifting Through absorbed and subsequently devoured several musicians over the year. We auditioned and gigged with a string of mental drummers (note, mental, not metal), and eventually we stumbled upon Brian and Paul, who were two musicians in a newly formed band called Mojo. (The Blue Coat Connection, as told by Brian Werner.)Paul and I moved to Raleigh from the sun-starved region of the country known as upstate New York, and like most Yankee transplants, we were looking for better weather, a booming job market, and great choices in grad schools. November 1997 brought the three founding members of DT together with us and our band, Mojo, who shared a stage with DT at the legendary Berkeley Café in Raleigh. Both bands were impressed with each other, and a few months later, in March of 1998, we got a call from them, asking us to sit in with them 'just for one show.' They were entered in the H.O.R.D.E. battle of the bands and had just fired their mental (not metal) drummer. Like DT, Mojo was comprised of good friends, and Paul and I had no intention of leaving the band, but agreed to sit in just for fun. Then fate took over and one of our members announced to the rest of us that he was moving back to New York. And so, Drifting Through was completed. |

Press Reviews
"There's really no reason why tracks like the album-opener 'McMurphy' or the pop ballad 'Twilight' shouldn't receive major spins on modern rock radio." -Spectator Magazine--------------------- "Drifting Through just might be the Tar Heel state's breakout act for 2000."-ESP Magazine----------------- "'Spell' is a gem of a disc...from the muscular, psychadelia-tinged rock of 'Hatteras' to the disarmingly seductive 'Sweetest Things,' the tunes on 'Spell' never disappoint."-Mountain Xpress Magazine----------------- "On the strength of its CD, Extended Play, Drifting Through presents itself asa highly polished and inventive band. The group has great songs with richmusical content, and a vocalist as distinctive as Dave Matthews...In essence, this group has a near perfect marriage of good songs and instrumental work.If they can continue to produce quality songs such as the superb opener, "The Ride," and the even funkier "Hatteras," they could really develop into something special."-Mick Skidmore, Relix Magazine.-------------------------------------- "The difference between this quintet and the seemingly endless string of bandswho play self-described 'jam-rock' lies in sheer technical prowess. DriftingThrough brings a polish to their music that lots of other young bands can onlydream of."-Asheville's Mountain Xpress |
