"You can't win, you know that don't you? You can't win, even if you whip us. You'll still be where you were before -- the bottom. And we'll still be the lucky ones with all the breaks...Greasers will still be Greasers and Socs will still be Socs. Sometimes I think it's the ones in the middle that are really the lucky stiffs..." ?From the bookThe OutsidersThe Lucky Stiffs are?Greg Dehoedt: Guitar/VoxSean Smith: Bass/VoxAaron Argandona: DrumsWe could sit here and write until our fingers bleed to try and sum us up, but if there was blood on the paper you couldn?t read it. Instead we will just simply say that we all started playing music because we had no other choice. Some people are supposed to be doctors or lawyers or even teachers. We were meant to be musicians. Music is all that we think about. It truly haunts us. Every day for us is one more chance to play and that?s why we wake up every morning. Playing in front of people is an addiction of it?s own. Those feelings of seeing someone having the time of their life and knowing you?re a part of it. That one moment, knowing that every word spoken, every note played is all that matters. For that one second no one cares if the world is even blowing up. We are all lost in that one thought. Now don?t get us wrong we don?t take ourselves that serious. We also do this cuz it is fun. It?s the one time in our whole life when we can do anything we want and no one will question it. Music gives us life, and that?s all we want to do is live.If you want to know where we came from, we will tell you. Greg is from Marshalltown, IA. Born and raised. Your ?normal? mid-America punk hated by all for having a different state of mind. He had played music and in bands his whole life. He moved to San Francisco in 1995 not knowing a soul. Only knowing what he was going to do for the rest of his life or die trying. Sean grew up in the Bay Area, in a working class life style. You know the type, finding trouble even if there wasn?t trouble to be found. Tired of looking for something that he didn?t want, he accepted his fate and sought out his reality. Coming to the city in 1995 little did he know that four years later he would meet Greg, a drummer at the time, in a band called Suspended in Amber. Both knew there was something else out there so they quit the band and moved on.They went on to form The Lucky Stiffs. At the time friend Matt Rhines was playing drums. They played some shows with The Stitches, The Bodies and some others until they were evicted from their rehearsal space. That seemed to be the end of that. Then Aaron came into the picture, and saved the day!Aaron grew up in East Los Angeles one bad ass MoFo! (So he says, hehe) After graduating High School and not really knowing what to do, he joined the ARMY. (I know I couldn?t believe it ether) He became a Combat Engineer, it was his job to make it safe for everyone else, you know blow shit up. After awhile the call to be a civilian over whelmed him and he got kicked out. Playing with different bands in L.A. he decided to move up to S.F. for a change of scene. Wanting to play again he got a tip from a friend to look on the Internet for bandmates, and guess who he found? In the later part of November 2000 The Lucky Stiffs came across a string of great ?luck?! They were given 5 hours to record for free at The California Recording Institute. With this chance they recorded their first 5 song EP called ?Tell your mom I?m sorry.? With the help of friends, family and fans they busted their asses to make sure everyone had a copy in their hand or had a chance to hear the songs. ?It was time to introduce our thoughts into other?s lives, we just hope they enjoy it.? With that, the rest is waiting to be written?.. |
