Artist History
The history of Profits Of Poison Written by:....... Daemon De Deitie...................................Profits Of Poison began as a Grind-Core band named WurmHole in the summer of ‘92. At the time the band only had two permanent members: Devurmos (Guitar) and Virus (vocals). I had met Virus a year earlier when I moved a couple of houses down from his girlfriend in the summer of ‘91. At the time I was 14. WurmHole needed a part-time drummer and I would had been a prime candidate except for the fact that I didn’t have a drum set and I was (and still am) a mediocre drummer at best. Besides that, I hated Grind-Core! But I did have this Yamaha drum machine thing that i bought at Sam Goody. It had four pads and something like a hundred voices and twenty preset beats. So eventually I did jam with them a few times in Devurmos’ dads garage. This is how I began to get to know Devurmos who would later become apart of Profits Of Poison. When I first got together with Devurmos something clicked between us right away. It took me quite a while to get to know him. In the beginning it was only our mutual passion for music and recognition that kept us together and made us good friends.WurmHole didn’t last long. Mostly do to the fact that they couldn't find permanent members. The last show they played was at a 4th of July party in ‘93 and it fell apart quickly. They didn’t have a bassist for the show but they did have a drummer lined up. The drummer ended up canceling at the last minute. And With none volunteering to help, Virus felt that they weren't being taken seriously. So in his drunken state, Virus decided the show must go on! It was a disaster. A Grind-Core band without a drummer? How could the crowd know when to mosh harder? The party was made up of mostly band members and they quickly started talking shit. Virus was so drunk that he hadn’t really noticed much of it. There was this guy that kept jumping on stage and stopping the show. He would get on the extra mike and ask the crowd to show there support. But at the same time he was the guy talking most of the shit in the crowd. Because of him WurmHole started their first song three times. To make a long story short, Virus ended up loosing interest in doing vocals. This was mainly do to the fact that his confidence had been stripped away from him. Later on he ran into a local band named Gods Of Nothing of whom he ended up playing pre-written material for on key’s. Devurmos moved onto another local band named Supremacy. Supremacy ended up being a pretty big local band. People still recognize the members and actually still own recordings. (I say move on!) This is where Devurmos got to know drummer Chris (?) who would later become part of the new Profits Of Poison line up in 2000. Supremacy eventually broke up in (?) do to the fact that the vocalist was an extreme ass.Devurmos and drummer Chris (?) along with a guitarist named Mike Nicks decided to form a new group. They moved into the basement of a huge warehouse on the outskirts of downtown Denver. The place was dubbed “The Crawl Space” and would become home to all the losers (including myself) that were trying to become rock stars but just couldn’t cut it. Gods Of Nothing moved in and the place was complete. I seem to recall more partying and beer drinking than actual instrument playing but it was a lot of fun. I was only down there a few of times, but the experience is something I’ll forever have etched in my mind. With Gods Of Nothing and the rest of the musicians a hybrid band was formed. I had my part in it too. I played and programmed sequences on key’s using the internal drum kits. It made for a great sound along with Chris on live drums. Here we had Grind-Core musicians along with Industrial Gothic musicians. The whole thing was a awesome concept. Virus was back on vocals and would play excerpts from various movies he recorded to tape. Devurmos was experimenting with key’s more and playing less guitar. There was a tremendous sense of freedom within this new band. And ultimately that freedom would lead to the bands destruction. It was a democracy with no leaders. Children with no guidance. Between that and the drinking along with the drugs the initial focus was lost. All the members eventually broke away and moved onto other things. And the whole experience quickly became another fading memory.Up to this point Devurmos and I hadn’t played much together by ourselves. Mostly because it wasn’t until the summer of ‘95 that I got my first real instruments. That summer Virus and I chipped in on a used drum machine (Alesis SR-16) and a sequencer (also Alesis). It was also the summer that i got a settlement for a car accident I was in back in January of ‘93. I spent what little I got from the settlement on another drum machine, the Roland TD-5 and a Peavey pa along with some concert speakers. The TD-5 was a drum machine but it had five 5” pads. So you set it up like a real drum set. That’s what I liked about it so much. Needless to say I was completely stoked. I was so excited in fact that I forgot to buy a stool. Devurmos bought a new instrument too. With his new found love for synthesizers he decided to buy one. It was an old Roland Juno-2. Which by the way belong to another Denver band named Filmstrip who had just broke up. Denver has more dead bands than America has dead soldiers. So a new band was formed. We called ourselves Sinflux which met “The inward flow of sin”. (Sinflux would later be the name used for our web site design company, which has yet to see the light of day.) Sinflux consisted of two main members, Devurmos and myself. Virus would stop by every once in a while to give his advice and do a bit of vocal work. Devurmos mostly played key’s, and I would go back and forth from drum machines to vocals. It was a meager setup but I was proud of it. This essentially went on for the next five years. We would practice when we had time considering our jobs and Devurmos’ married life (yuck!). Members came and went as they pleased but Devurmos and I stuck together. Through the next five years I borrowed a lot of misc. equipment and played by myself a lot. The equipment we did have stayed at my house so I had full time access to it. Some of the stuff made it to tape. But most of the time I didn't think much of what I had written. It wasn’t until the summer of ‘97 that we got our first four track recorder. This made it possible for us to add instruments we were lacking. That same summer I Bought a new drum machine ( the Alesis DM4) and sold my Roland Td-5 brain to Virus but kept the pads. This was also when we changed our name to Profits Of Poison. In December of ‘98 Devurmos let me borrow his PC. We loaded Acid and Sound Forge up and started doing loop based material. The original idea was to sample things from our four track recordings and give it an edge. But what we ended up doing for the next month was creating new material. We only had a month because Devurmos needed his computer for work and other things. We couldn’t do it at his house because of lack of space and people always getting in the way. In October of ‘99 I borrowed another PC from a lady I met through Devurmos. She owns a web development company and needed some help designing some web sites. I told her I would do it if she let me borrow a computer. When I wasn’t designing I was hard at work on a new track. At the time, I began to get into Drum N Bass and New York style Illbient type stuff. I started sampling really random things and making Break Beats. The material produced was completed without outside help and represents a four month time period. I began to separate myself from the outside world and my insomnia became extreme. I think with all those elements combined it made for really edgy but hollow material. From there I felt that I was getting burnt out working by myself. So in April or so of 2000 I decided to call Devurmos and get started on putting another live band together. We got ourselves a space and went to work. The line up consist of the same charactors. Virus, (vocals/ lyrics/ samples) Devurmos, (guitar/ keys) Chris, (drums) and Demon Deitie (vocals/ lyrics/ drum machines). We’re still in need of another keyboardist, a bassist and maybe a female vocalist. And Later on we hope to include a Hip Hop Dj. This time around we’re trying not to make the same mistakes and just take it one step at a time.....................................Daemon De Deitie -Profits Of Poison................ |
