Kirsten Williams 1999 album release: Where I Was
Review from "Antimatters" by Erica Smith
On the cover of Kirsten Williams’ CD, she is pictured asleep in a bedroom reconstructed outdoors among dry grass and pines. This dreamlike quality pervades the album. Backed by a full band, Kirsten achieves a sound that is ambient and gorgeous. The first and title track has a gentle, swaying rhythm (as well as a catchy melody and a really nice bridge) that draws the listener in. As the songs unfold, they are both soulful and subtle.
Using a band, Kirsten gives her songs room to breathe and expand. We can feel the wide range of her strong alto voice, and gain a full appreciation of her lyricism. My favorites in the lyric department come from "Somnambulist" ("You sleepwalk at night / Leaving behind your bed / Dancing in the moonlight / Right into my head") and "The Harem" ("What happened to the harem? / Where did all those ruined women go?").
Also, the band gives Kirsten’s songs a really nice country-folk flavor. Pedal steel provides emotional color without being too twangy, the percussion is by turns gentle, driving, and eerie, and the violin is really heartbreaking.
This CD would be delightful for a road trip soundtrack, or for feeling like you’re on a road trip when you don’t have the money to actually go anywhere. Like Emmylou Harris’ Wrecking Ball, Kirsten’s Where I Was is elegant and affecting.
