    Artist History
After cutting her teeth performing as a DJ on college radio (KSCU, Santa Clara, CA) and a frontwoman for Andalusia (a San Francisco Bay Area-based band along the lines of Slowdive and Ride), Anya Marina moved to San Diego, CA to pursue a career in broadca sting and entertainment. Shortly after landing a job as "on-air personality" at 92/5 FM (XHRM Radio), one of the last Independent Radio Stations in the U.S., Anya was laid off (along with the rest of the station) during major corporate mergers. After t r udging the streets in despair, Anya began playing open mic night at Java Joe's, a renowned, artist-friendly listening room, as well as landing film roles in independent films & TV.In no time, she was playing Joe's regularly and gaining a loyal following i n San Diego, sharing stages with everyone from Steve Poltz (the Rugburns), the Dragons, the Incredible Moses Leroy, Elgin Park, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), and Rhett Miller (Old 97's). Anya recently received a San Diego Music Awards nominat ion as Best Acoustic act and Best Newcomer. She will be featured as Rhonda, the neurotic eyebrow picker in "100 Girls," a feature film directed by Michael Davis, out later this year. Anya recently landed the mid-day weekend shift at KFSD (92/1FM), a new alternative--and yes, independently-owned--radio station in San Diego.n

"As innocuous as a cobra, as mundane as an Indian shaman, as soft-spoken as Louis Farrakhan, as stoic as a mime, as prim as a Mennonite. . . well, you get the point. Anya Marina mixes sardonic lyrics with fetching hooks andpoignant life observations...[an d] brings her sparkling, Linda Richman-esque stage presence to the San Diego music scene. Her budding solo work is bolstered by her diverse background in the arts that includes acting, radio DJing (at the now moribund The Flash, among others), and a two-y ear stint with Northern California band, Andalusia. "I can?t remember a time when I wasn?t [a performer],? she says. ?It wasn?t until I had my first college radio show, though, that I realized I needed to create something that was my own, my own show wi th my own bits. But I couldn?t find a job to do that in the commercial radio world, so when I came down here I realized I could start playing solo with a guitar. In a way, I took my radio show to the stage, which was even more fun than sitting in a stud io not being able to see my audience, playing all these songs that I didn?t write." Marina?s stage presence is one of her strengths, as she mixes short soliloquies and anecdotes with catchy, outlandish tune s and her sonorous voice. Behind this charisma stand well-constructed, vituperative lyrics with a humorous, witty bite in songs like "Sociopath," "Millionaire," and "Miss Half Way."--Rich Van Heertum, SLAMM MagazineMore at:http://www.slammsd.com/ba ck_is sues/134_052400/cover.story.html#Anya Marinauæ
