    Artist History
The White Oak Singers were formed in 1989, when Colin Bearstail moved to White Oak, Maryland from California. After his arrival, he approached several tribal relatives living in the area about starting a singing group. Several of the original members had never sang before. The original members included Colin Bearstail, Wayne Howard, Lawrence Baker, Wes Picciotti, Sonny Reeves, Silas Satepahoodle and Bill Larocque. Colin used his knowledge of the original singing style of the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota, to teach these young men the songs of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara people.

In the early 1990's, the Discovery Channel commissioned the drum group to sing for the production of the documentary, "How the West was Lost." We provided several songs that eventually were used in the final production, that aired on PBS, TBS and the Discovery Channel. In the September 1999, the group was honored to be the Host Drum for the Ground Breaking Ceremony in Washington, DC for the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian.
