Artist History
MATTHEW TAN :
as any musician born in a british colony, the influence of artists such as Cliff Richard,
Donovan, etc are unavoidably evident. thankfully, at least to me, because these
artists taught me the importance of melody, variety and colour, as opposed to flair and
monotony of the more popular choice. my first guitar was inherited by chance, an acoustic
steel string guitar that was thrown away in the thrashcan by my eldest brother, who seemingly
failed to master the basic C F G to encourage him to pursue his lessons.
fortunately, (or perharps, to some, unfortunately) for me, i found the guitar while kicking
around the tennis ball during one of those common-place makeshift-football matches
with the neighbourhood kids. from that fateful day, i not only aspired to be denis law/georgie best
i also aspired to be cliff richard/donovan,
i even painted my brother's guitar to resemble the one donovan had, with the words:"this machine kills".
ages later, here i am, coming a full circle; having travelled extensively
and performed in several bands of a myraid of genres (rock, blues, folk, jazz, fusion)...
of course, in those days, we were not obssessed with having so many sub-divisions of genres;
fortunately, our disc-jockeys (at least, some of them) of those day were more interested
in the quality of the music, than to pigeon-hole the artist into one category.
in 2003, i sold my battery of electric instruments, multi-track, synthesizers, the whole
collection of fender & gibson guitars,etc... and bought myself a yamaha classical guitar...
back to basics, acoustic...
anything else that you hear in the music, has been processed to give it a more varied sound,
but the raw takes were basically one guitar one voice.

Press Reviews
.....In 2003,this Montreal based composer/solo-guitarist abandoned his battery of electric guitars, synthesizers,
digital drums and processing pedals, to return to his first instrument: the classical
guitar.
His first release of solo classical new age jazz tunes was under his SOCAN registered
pseudonym JOSEPH SENLIANG, on an all instrumental album
entitled: "The wind is my metronome".
His second release "THE SILENT HEART" ,
consisting of vocal tunes, is set to be available here on this mp3 site
under his composer's name, tentative date: canadian summer 2003 (july-august).
this album has a mixed bag of bossa nova ,with sort washes of modern country/blues,
similar to Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, Garth Brooks)..
all done with a touch of panache.
(EMBRYO CONCEPTS production). |
