Artist History
Mark Meed was born in 1952 in Ottawa. An Air Force brat, Mark spent most of his formative years on large clumps of igneous rock surrounded by barbed wire, an experience he says prepared him for playing bars in Northern Ontario. He majored in psychology at Carleton and “ darn near graduated ” but for a spotty attendance record and a marked disinterest in the behavior of white rats. He cites his fondest memories of university as including a creative writing class with Mordecai Richler, the student theatre and newspaper, and “ some quality time to get this three-finger picking thing under control ”. Through the seventies and early eighties Mark became a fixture at coffee-houses and folk-festivals in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto. Like many of his ilk in the mid-eighties he migrated to the bar scene, playing guitar and singing in various pop and blues bands. His memories of that period largely revolve around hundreds of hotels all called “ The Albion ” or “ The Queens ” throughout Ontario. Apart from teaching him how to maintain stage poise in the middle of a knife fight, it also exposed him to many musical styles that would later be incorporated into his songs. These diverse musical influences are well represented in his newest album, The Glory Details, a collection whose songs encompass folk, blues, reggae and new country. Although the Christian sensibility is unmistakable in the lyrics, there is nothing glib or simplistic about them. The challenging nature of the themes, as well as the evident song-craft, has won Mark a significant following in both Christian and secular circles. Since 1993 Mark has been applying his skills and experience to worship and evangelism. From 1993-1997 he served as a worship leader at Scarborough Vineyard Christian Fellowship. During that time he recorded four original songs on the SVCF Worshipping Heart album, and was one of the producers on the Daughter of Zion album. In 1995 he recorded his first solo album Faith the Music. In 1997 Mark moved to Peterborough, Ontario where he currently resides with his wife Lori, daughter Rebecca and brand new son, Mitchell. They are currently members of Gilmour Memorial Baptist Church where Mark is active in worship leading, youth band and "anything else they ask me to do." In keeping with his "itinerant roots" Mark also serves as "supply worship leader" at the Thornhill Vineyard, All Nations Vineyard (Alderville) and Scarborough Vineyard. |
