Artist description
Like the perfumed smell of a good-looking woman in a sweaty bar, turn’s intense emotional rock is that rare thing capable of causing a loss of time and place. Not content to be just another cover band, turn is steadily establishing itself as a rising talent among an already-crowded music scene with a sound that feels original and heart-felt among a sea of clichés. Borrowing from groups past and present, they take the next step, together with the audience, by bringing a voice to the thoughts behind lyrics, always leaving an intoxicating air of excitement to linger long after the stage is empty. The brain-child of lead vocalist Ian Schwarber in spring of 2000, turn, or drift, as they were know for a time, began simply as an acoustic demo, with able backing from guitarist and New Jersey native Kevin Mount. Fueled with an eagerness, a passion, and the motivation that is required of fledgling artists beginning to fit the pieces together, they used their rough, two-man LP to interest drummer Peter Decker, fresh into Charleston, S.C., from Atlanta, Georgia. Bass player Numb, featured beforehand in Columbia’s rock group-mainstay Betty Sneetch, came on board last as the result of a serendipitous bulletin board flyer. Acting on an instinct of furious hunger, the band entered the studio soon after to record The History ep, a set of five songs that were strong enough to peek the curiosity of a number of live venues. Turn played close to thirty shows between late September and mid-December, throwing themselves into the sink-or-swim atmosphere that separates groups wanting to be a band from those who actually do it. January 2001 brought the release of their album Walking the Nexus, which has been heavily circulated among the South-Eastern states, earning turn airplay on stations such as 98Rock, WUSC, in Columbia, S.C., and the College of Charleston’s current radio frequency (FCC license still pending). And turn even continues to distribute their cd’s free of charge to anyone and everyone who takes the time to ask. Rather earnestly, and rather unabashedly, they really do just want to give their audience what any of us wants. Something really good to listen to. While you drive in your car, while you finish a beer, while you make love. With their sound resembling, and paying homage to, such diverse acts as U2, Fleetwood Mac, Fuel, and the Counting Crows, turn forces itself to get better, to weave successfully among the chords of hard-and-fast tunes, as well as more somber ballads, for their own personal satisfaction and for that of their fans, who continue to travel and to listen with wide-eyed enthusiasm. Because that is the point of turn. |
